Southern Californian resort plans US$25 million renovation

Private real estate investment and development firm Meriwether Companies has acquired a resort in southern California, USA, with the aim of undertaking a US$25 million refresh.

The 200-acre Morgan Run Club & Resort is situated in the affluent community of Rancho Santa Fe and serves guests looking for outdoor fitness offerings and boutique accommodations.

Hotel reimagining

Meriwether Companies will invest more than US$25 million in a renovation to enhance and reimagine the property, including its racquet sports, golf, dining and hotel components.

Design and planning are already underway, and the work will be completed over the next two to three years with minimal disruption to guests. The construction will occur in phases, allowing the resort to remain open.

Resort profile

The resort houses 76 hotel rooms, and among its amenities are a restaurant with indoor/outdoor dining and 17,000 square feet of private event space.

Sports facilities include a 27-hole championship golf course, a 320-yard driving range, short game practice facilities, 10 tennis hard courts, four pickleball courts, a heated outdoor swimming pool and fitness facility.

The hotel will be completely revitalised with upscale exterior and interior room renovations along with new management and operations. Planned enhancements on the rest of the estate include: upgrades to the common areas in the dining, banquet and fitness spaces of the clubhouse; converting the existing spa into a communal recovery area; investments in the golf course irrigation, bunkering and re-grassing; construction of a new pool and casual dining outlet; renovation of the racquet sports area including the tennis, pickleball and sports courts; and an improved pool. Estimated completion is slated for late 2025.

Diamond in the rough

David Likins, partner, Meriwether Companies, said: “We recognised an incredible opportunity to shape the future of what we consider to be a true diamond in the rough, a classic Southern California golf escape with rich history dating back to the 1960s. We believe there is a gap in the market for a more casual, vibrant and community-oriented club that aligns with the north coastal San Diego market.”

Graham Culp, partner, Meriwether Companies, added: “Racquet sports are having an exciting moment and we’re looking forward to transforming this sector into a key pillar of the club. Guests and members can look forward to a new world-class racquet facility and programming that rivals the best in California.”

California additions

Meriwether Companies’ current projects include the luxury Talus development in La Quinta, California, involving two Montage International hotel brands.

Montage Resort La Quinta will be first to open in Q1 2024, delivering 134 rooms, while Pendry Hotel La Quinta will add a further 200 keys in Q4 2024.
