An 18-storey Sheraton has been approved in the sleepy beachside Australian town of Hervey Bay, following much debate within the local community.

The 5-star hotel, to be located 300 kilometres from Brisbane, will become the tallest building on the Hervey Bay esplanade upon its completion.

The $450 million complex finally won council approval in late July, with a caveat imposed necessitating that the hotel must be completed within 10 years.

Sheraton Hervey Bay will contain hundreds of rooms over two towers, with a rooftop bar overlooking the water on its highest level. The complex was originally slated to be 21 storeys, however this number was lowered to win council approval.

The hotel plans also includes a resort pool, fitness centre, business lounge, conference and functions space, kids club and signature restaurant.

Sustainable practice

It will also employ best practice lighting design, to manage impacts on local fauna, while also minimising skyglow.

Hervey Bay as a holiday destination has rapidly increased in popularity over the last decade, in part due to its reputation as a whale-watching spot. Nearby K’Gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) is also popular with both local and international visitors.

It will be the fifth Sheraton in Australia, and the Hervey Bay property will join the luxury brand’s exciting pipeline in the APAC region, which includes Sheraton Langkawi and Sheraton Port Moresby
