Sculptural stairs in the five-star superior hotel The Fontenay

Spiral sculptural stairs by MetallArt are a stylish eye-catcher in the five-star superior hotel The Fontenay in Hamburg, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

With 130 rooms in highest quality equipment, an infinity pool, a spacious spa area and extensive parks, the hotel of superlatives promises relaxation on a very exclusive level on an area of 14,000 sq m. Especially, the exceptional design of the hotel fascinates its guests.

Three interconnected circles in a curvy design define the floor plan of the architectural highlight. The centre of these circles accommodates a green patio transporting the spirit of nature into the hotel facilities.

The impressive architectural concept of this building comes from the Hamburg-based office of Störmer Murphy and Partners. Beside a large number of custom-made furniture, the steel stringer staircase, as well as the glass railing by MetallArt, captivate with circular design and imposing shapes.

Premium staircase for an exclusive interior

The single-flight steel stringer staircase featuring a flight width of 1,500 mm matches harmoniously with the cosy interior concept of the hotel. The two-sided parapet-high flat-steel stringers of the sculptural staircase show a thickness of 10 to 15 mm and constitute balustrades in modern design.

They were completed with top-attached rectangular handrails made of wenge wood. In particular, the shaping of the handrail in an ascending curved design was very challenging but successfully implemented by the stair experts with the utmost precision and know-how.

The tread step construction was realised with combined steps in folded and box-type design. Due to the three-dimensionally bent steel soffit cladding, which was finished according to structural requirements, the steel staircase receives its sculptural character.

Glass railings for more light and transparency

Owing to the evenly round and horizontal glass railing in the Fontenay bar, the guests have a view into the 27 m high atrium of the five-star-plus hotel, which represents the lounge but also a place for entertainment.

In addition to the stylish appearance of the steel stringer stairs, the all-glass railing is another major highlight. To minimise the green cast, it was manufactured of white glass.

For the handrail, a filigree stainless-steel U-section, approximately 35 x 17mm, was attached onto the panes of laminated safety glass and finished by gluing. The panes themselves, single-pane safety glass and laminated safety glass, show a length of 2.000 mm and a thickness of 16 to 20 mm.

The client and the architect’s office were more than satisfied with the performance of the staircase specialist: “…The design concept for The Fontenay Hotel was the circle. It is therefore understandable that a connection between two floors has to be made by a spiral staircase, which also had to feature a sculptural form of utmost craftsmanship…MetallArt has met this wish of the architect, thank you!…”, said partner Jan Störmer of Störmer Murphy and Partners.
