Roca’s innovative approach to sustainable solutions in the bathroom takes the lead at a luxury retreat in Morocco.

An appreciation of the landscape and local culture creates a feeling of serenity in a family-friendly resort.

The Fairmont Taghazout Bay is a luxury 5-star resort overlooking the bay of Taghazout, a laid-back surf town on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco. With a focus on wellness, service and family-friendly environments, the hotel, designed by HKS Architect with Moroccan architect Abdessamad Achrai, integrates naturally with its surroundings, establishing an intimate paradise in which clients are invited to relax and enjoy. With 146 rooms and suites, Roca collaborated on this large-scale project in a valuable way, providing bathroom fixtures and furniture that are elegant and adaptable, but which also embraced sustainability and a consideration of energy and water saving requirements. Located in a quiet region, near the desert, water is a critical concern, therefore the commission for energy efficient products was integral to the project.

Interior design firm Wimberly Interiors took inspiration from the Moroccan landscape – the sea, sand and sky. The interior design is light and fresh with accents of inky, Moroccan blue throughout. But with high volume and multi-use purposes, the resort is also designed to sustain high-impact use and be accessible. “We wanted to partner with a respected name in the bathroom space that would not only understand our vision for the project but provide excellent service, top products, and the benefit of having much of it locally produced”, says Rachel Johson, Senior Vice President and Studio Director for the WATG’s London office.

From chrome finishes to statement bathtubs, the Fairmont Taghazout Bay project included a variety of Roca products that reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation and design in the bathroom space. Vitreous china Access basins in white set the tone for the long black-stone sinks while the Ariane Bathtub reimagines the limits of what a bathtub can be. At 165 cm long, it is comfortable fit for two people, and its thin, curvaceous form is like a freestanding sculpture in the larger bathrooms. The bathtub is made using Stonex, a sustainable and proprietary material that uses recycled materials and is also more malleable than traditional stoneware, allowing for these more complex shapes in the bathroom space. The timeless chrome loft faucets feature an electronic sensor, a water-saving device that is also designed for easier accessibility in high-volume spaces, and the Atlas chrome faucets are designed with cold start technology, a simple yet ground-breaking system that saves water and energy costs at every turn. The project also used the Raindream shower heads – an example of how each room in the resort is designed to be a sanctuary – a place to truly relax and refresh.

Roca bathroom products were used in the rooms and suites as well as in public spaces across the resort’s property. In addition, Roca’s two-Morocco based factories produced most of the ceramics used in this project, keeping the overall carbon footprint to a minimum.

The Fairmont Taghazout Bay total took nearly 8-years to complete and was opened in 2021. With every last detail considered in its design, the resort is an example of how a large-scale luxury project can blend a warm and sophisticated design with sustainable solutions. This becomes a benefit for the hotel clients as well as for the long-term vision of the hotel brand.
