Prague is looking forward to the opening of a new 523-room Hard Rock Hotel

According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, 1,955 hotel schemes are in the pipeline across Europe, with the UK and Germany proving particularly active.

Some 1,955 hotels with a grand total of 327,942 rooms are in the works throughout Europe, our researchers have discovered. We take a closer look at the region’s top growth markets and pick out a few new properties worth watching out for.

Europe’s hotel openings by year

We’ve found that 2021 is set to be a busy year for Europe’s hotel market with 639 planned openings, which will bring a total of 96,482 rooms into play. This high number may be down to the fact that many schemes originally pencilled in for a 2020 launch were delayed when Covid19 first hit and are only now nearing completion.

In 2022, another 425 properties with 71,779 rooms are scheduled to open. A further 254 hotels with 45,243 keys will follow in 2023, while 637 projects with 114,438 rooms are on the cards for 2024 and beyond.

Of Europe’s 1,955 new hotels, over two-thirds (1,396 properties) will be in the four-star sector. The remaining third (559 hotels) are targeting the luxury five-star category.

Top hotel markets in Europe

The UK takes the lead on a country-by-country basis, with 488 projects and 70,531 rooms lined up. London alone will see nearly a quarter of these openings; the city is due to get 114 extra hotels with 20,017 keys, making it Europe’s top urban hotel market ahead of the Irish capital Dublin, which has 60 hotels and 9,313 rooms on its development slate.

Germany takes second place among national growth markets with 369 ongoing schemes and 58,036 rooms, followed by France where 127 properties will bring 20,370 additional keys. 36 of these properties will launch in Paris, adding 7,290 rooms to the city’s offering and making it the region’s third most dynamic urban hotel market.

Italy will get 98 new properties with 13,874 rooms, while 90 projects with 17,092 rooms have been earmarked for Spain.

Key hotel brands expanding in Europe

Hampton by Hilton leads our list of Europe’s most active brands as it’s planning to open 49 hotels with 7,963 rooms.

This puts it well ahead of Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Garden Inn. The former intends to grow by 24 properties and 4,569 rooms, while the latter is hoping to deliver 24 schemes and 3,814 keys.

Watch out for the following European hotel projects

From early 2024, Hard Rock Hotel Letná Prague will bring the Hard Rock brand’s signature energy to the Czech capital. This 523-room hotel will offer splendid views of Letná Park and Prague Castle from the elegant Sky Bar, and there’ll also be specialty restaurants and a coffee shop. The walls in many of its public spaces, moreover, will be decked out with valuable music memorabilia from the world’s top artists, as is customary for Hard Rock hotels.

Over in London’s Strand East neighbourhood, a 350-room hotel will form part of a new urban development due for completion in early 2023; for now, we’re calling the scheme Hotelproject London Strand East. Upon completion, the huge car-free area will also incorporate 1,200 homes, as well as offices, schools, shops, a water-taxi service, a floating cocktail bar and moorings available for residents’ use.

Up in Scandinavia, meanwhile, Lapland Hotels Tampere Arena will open towards the end of this year. Located next to Finland’s largest multipurpose arena, the hotel will offer 273 high-quality rooms, plus a restaurant with 350 seats, a bar and a small store stocked with necessities.
