Recap: Hottest hotel openings in January 2022
by Lauren Jade Hill | 31 Jan 2022 | Hotel Openings, Projects
Our pick of the most exciting properties to have launched this month features the prestigious Radisson Collection, Kimpton and Curio Collection by Hilton brands.
From Berlin to Lisbon via Koh Samui, each of these openings reflects its location with the inclusion of carefully considered design elements.
Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin
This month saw the launch of Radisson Hotel Group’s new German flagship Radisson Collection scheme in the heart of the capital. The unveiling of the 427-key Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin followed an extensive 12-month renovation of an existing property, which involved the revamp of all guestrooms and suites, the introduction of a reimagined front desk space, and the debut of new lobby, bar and restaurant designs. The property’s famous AquaDom, which is the largest freestanding cylindrical aquarium in the world, remains the centrepiece of the lobby.
Rooms and suites decorated in wood, with plum and grey tones, feature impactful artworks and in some cases come with balconies overlooking the River Spree and city. Guests can drink and dine beneath the AquaDom at Atrium Bar, where the focus falls on local ingredients, and Balaustine Restaurant is set to open in March 2022, offering a taste of the Levant in a space that encompasses a terrace. Additional amenities include 2,750 sq m of event space, not least the exclusive DomLounge, and Heaven Spa, home to a Finnish sauna and indoor pool.
Kimpton Kitalay Samui, Thailand
Kimpton Kitalay Samui opened in January 2020 as the luxury lifestyle brand’s first resort in South-East Asia. Taking its name from ‘kita’, meaning ‘song’ in Thai, and ‘lay’, translating to ‘sea’ – together signifying the siren song of the sea – it combines the brand’s signature identity with a refreshing take on the Samui way of life. Located on Choengmon Beach within easy reach of Koh Samui International Airport, the scheme stands on double-tiered, stilt-suspended platforms, and has been brought to life by P49 Deesign with repurposed driftwood along with traditional design accents and local art.
The 138 rooms and villas here come with an earthy palette, wave-inspired furnishings and Thai basketry motifs. This accommodation is joined by five distinct dining venues: LANAI, offering finely curated coffees, teas and local spirits; Fish House, for all-day beach house dining; Shades Ocean Lounge and Pool Bar; Boho, a Thai lifestyle café; and HOM Baking Company. Guests can unwind at the Pimãanda by HARNN spa, meanwhile, work out in the 24-hour gym or take a dip in the outdoor pool, and children can play in the split-level kids’ club Junio, which spans 500 sq m and is designed for active exploration.
The Emerald House Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton
The January opening of The Emerald House Lisbon marked the debut of Curio Collection by Hilton in the Portuguese capital. Taking inspiration for its name from the street it’s part of – Rua das Janelas Verdes, translating as ‘Street of Green Windows’ – this 67-room hotel takes over a restored building amid the city’s palaces and historic churches. Its ground-floor space, which was once a bakery, is back serving tantalising pastries and breads, while items belonging to former residents of the building feature throughout.
Public areas showcase interiors pairing modern decor with local antiques, and works of art can be viewed in the hotel’s restaurant A Mesa, which offers contemporary Portuguese drinks and dishes, and Five O’Clock Bar. There’s also a 24-hour fitness centre at this hotel, which is ideally located next to the National Museum of Ancient Art and a short walk from the upmarket neighbouring areas of Chiado and Baixa, as well as the city’s famous Cais Do Sodre, also known as Pink Street.
