Global hotel giants IHG and Hyatt Hotels Corporation are behind some of the most exciting hospitality schemes to have made their debuts this month.
Local inspiration and striking design help set apart these new Voco, Thompson Hotels and Hotel Indigo-branded properties from the competition.
Voco The Bank Johannesburg Rosebank
IHG debuted its upscale brand in Africa with the February 2022 opening of Voco Bank Johannesburg Rosebank. This development, promising the reassurance of a global brand paired with the informality and charm of an individual hotel, spans six floors of Rosebank’s striking mixed-use scheme The Bank, within easy reach of Gautrain. Home to 131 guestrooms and suites in space, it also showcases original local artwork.
Guestrooms with double-volume ceilings neatly illustrate the Voco concept, incorporating thoughtful touches like cosy bedding made from 100% recycled materials, organic Antipodes amenities, high-speed wifi, smart TVs and executive desks. This accommodation is joined by the modern mid-century-inspired all-day eatery Proud Mary, Workshop17 for remote working and a fully equipped gym. This property was created in collaboration with Valor Hospitality Partners Africa and the architectural design is courtesy of Daffonchio Architects – Johannesburg.
Thompson Hotel Denver
This new T2 Hospitality-owned Hyatt property under the Thompson Hotels brand is now open in Denver’s LoDo neighbourhood. Brought to life by Parts and Labor Design, the 216-key newbuild pairs the brand’s signature mid-century modern and urban style with upscale mountain chalet chic and inspiration taken from the local community. The hotel features a signature restaurant from Chef Ludo Lefebvre, a sixth-floor sunroom bar and lounge, a private dining space and event rooms named after Denver’s most notorious early citizens, a lobby-level café and retail space, and a fitness centre.
At Thompson Hotel Denver, a sense of place is instilled through the property’s interior design, using natural materials like wood, stone and copper, along with classic mountain town touches. In the lobby, guests encounter a two-story hearth fireplace extending down to luxurious residential-style social space on the lower level. Each area is then adorned with works by Colorado artists.
The hotel’s luxurious accommodation includes the 1,032 sq ft Thompson Suite, featuring a two-sided indoor / outdoor glass fireplace and expansive terrace. Moreover, all guestrooms come with Sferra bedding, DS & Durga amenities and a curated honour bar.
Hotel Indigo New Orleans – French Quarter
In partnership with Newstream Companies, IHG has launched Hotel Indigo New Orleans – French Quarter, taking inspiration from local traditions including the sounds of the city’s ‘second-line’ parades, which are woven into the fabric of the community. Designed by Campo Architects, this opening follows on from the refurbishment of a ten-storey property that was formerly the Royal St Charles Hotel in the Central Business District along the world’s oldest continuously operating street railway.
The locally inspired hotel is home to 143 guestrooms and social areas, including restaurant lounge Common Interest, offering a contemporary take on traditional New Orleans cuisine. Additional amenities here include a fitness centre and multiple meeting spaces.
