Radisson Hotel Group now has 16 hotels in operation and under development across South Africa after signing up for a 150-room newbuild property that’s due to launch in 2023.
A mining and manufacturing hub near Johannesburg will soon be able to boast its very own Radisson-branded hotel.

Radisson Hotel Group has announced the signing of Radisson Hotel Middelburg, a newbuild, 150-key hotel that’ll place guests within walking distance of a major retail complex, the Middelburg Mall. Located off the N4, the town provides easy access to the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg, just 90 minutes from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport.
Ramsay Rankoussi, vice president of development in Africa and Turkey for Radisson Hotel Group, said: “South Africa remains a key focus market for us in Africa, and we are thrilled to announce our 16th hotel in the country following the opening of Radisson Red Johannesburg Rosebank last week.
“We are excited to further expand our presence across South Africa at a rapid rate as we continue on the road to recovery following the pandemic. Radisson Hotel Middelburg marks our third Radisson-branded hotel in the country, reinforcing the brand’s presence and its strong potential in South Africa.”
The deal means that Radisson Hotel Group has 16 hotels in operation and under development across South Africa – and is on track to have 150 properties in operation and under development throughout the continent within the next five years.
Daniel Trappler, senior director of development in Sub-Saharan Africa for Radisson Hotel Group, added: “Our entry into Middelburg is a testament to Radisson Hotel Group’s development strategy in the country, in which we have identified key secondary and tertiary towns and cities that are displaying strong market dynamics, encouraging the the group’s growth therein via conversion and newbuild opportunities. Radisson Hotel Middelburg will certainly assist in uplifting the town and support its drive to boost tourism as it is the only internationally branded hotel.”

Designed for business and leisure
The new hotel will house a restaurant and bar, as well as a lobby lounge and pool bar offering a range of food and drink options. Leisure amenities here will include a fitness centre, swimming pool and pool terrace.
Catering for business as well as leisure travellers, the scheme will open concurrently with a neighbouring convention centre, which is currently under construction. The hotel itself will have 2,300 sq m of meeting and event space, encompassing a pre-function area, banquet hall and eight meeting rooms.
Middelburg is located in the cultural heartland of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Known as a mining and manufacturing hub, the town’s estimated to produce over 80% of the country’s coal, and serves as a stopover point for travellers on the N4 and N11 roads connecting Pretoria, Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Mozambique and Durban.
Radisson Hotel Middelburg is expected to open at the end of 2023.
