TOPHOTELPROJECTS’ maiden hospitality networking event in the city of angels deep dives into downtown LA’s hotel boom, leading brands and top-notch design
The boutique networking event, now in its 4th year, brought together the cream of the local, regional and international hospitality for a full-day of riveting networking sessions, thought-provoking presentations and panel discussions, and – lest you forget – fun!
Kicking off the day with this trademark energy, humor and enthusiasm, keynote speaker Nick Arnette gave tips on how to add value and be genuine when it comes to networking.
The main theme of discussion for the 60-odd delegates from various sectors of hospitality – operation, investment, development, design, architects, suppliers and media – was the rapidly revitalising urban core of Los Angeles.
Downtown LA, which for many years was somewhat of a desert in terms of hospitality development, has greatly flourished in recent years.
Today, the area is home to more than 10,000 rooms spread across both branded and independent full-service and boutique hotels. Impressively, this growth comes amid intense pressure by home-sharing services such as Airbnb.
The panel discussion titled “Ultimate Game-Changer? Downtown LA’s Hospitality Revolution” — moderated by Luke Bujarski, Founder & CEO, LUFT — saw big names such as Bruce Balton, Managing Director, CBRE Hotels; Christopher M. Henry, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO, Majestic Hospitality Group; Benjamin Young, Vice President of Asset Management, AEG; and Bob Sonnenblick, Principal, Sonnenblick Development debate how Downtown LA has undergone recent revitalisation and is poised to help this city remain among the top-performing U.S. hotel markets.
WINNERS TAKE IT ALL
The conference also saw top-notch speakers and industry thought-leaders such as John Fareed, Managing Director, Horwath HTL give a market update on the LA lodging market, while David Kuperberg, Chief Development Officer, Dream Hotel Group made a spectacular presentation on the inspirational global story of Dream Hotels.
TOPHOTELPROJECTS Founder and CEO Rolf W. Schmidt delivered a keynote presentation on hotel development in the US with a focus on big projects and big brands.
Other highlights from the Los Angeles program included the Creative Spark design award where Brooks Atwood’s Woodlark Hotel project was voted as winner.
Atwood, Design Director at R&A Architecture + Design, fended off tough competition from Gensler’s Hogan Chun who presented the Arts Club in West Hollywood; and HBA’s Darrell Long who showcased Dream Palm Springs.
The next leg of the event will take place in Barcelona on June 27.
