Fire & Ice! by the sea in Durban
Marriott’s fourth Fire & Ice! hotel has opened in South Africa, this time in the city of Durban. The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Durban Umhlanga Ridge opened in July, and is the latest addition to this rapidly growing brand. Joining three other Fire & Ice! hotels across the country, the Durban property takes full advantage of its enviable location – close to the Umhlanga Rocks Beach and along the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Guests can heartily appreciate Durban’s unique mix of city and sea in the uMhlanga resort town, the cultures of both merging to create a truly inimitable destination where visitors can take in the urban sights of the city, or head to the coast to immerse themselves in nature.
Durban dreams with Marriott
Fire & Ice! is one of Marriott’s more idiosyncratic brands, and this property does not disappoint when it comes to shaking things up. As with all of the brand’s hotels, this venue boasts DJs, comedy nights and daring decor, to name but a few of its signature features, which also happen to make it a perfect fit for Durban. “Durban is a dynamic, cosmopolitan city with a need for a hotel brand that matches its spirit. We are thrilled to introduce Fire & Ice! by Marriott brand with its trend-setting aesthetic fused with local influence to the thriving town of uMhlanga. Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Durban uMhlanga Ridge will provide the quirky, modern vibe that guests and locals in this area are looking for. The property reflects our agility and adaptability to identify and transform a property to suit an evolving destination,” said Volker Heiden, Area Vice-President for Marriott International.
The property is also notable for its fresh and modern design, which errs on the side of kooky. The hotel’s 205 guest rooms recently underwent an extensive renovation, revitalising the tired interiors and bringing them into the 21st century with innovative twists such as eye-catching sea scenes festooned above the beds. The common areas too are anything but shy, which make them the perfect place for the weekly DJ nights that are held every Friday. “We have put considerable thought into making this property utterly unique, while still retaining the high standard of guest experience and professional and efficient service for which Fire & Ice! by Marriott hotels are known. This hotel will do more than just provide a room or a place to eat. We’re a lifestyle hotel that curates experiences and we look forward to welcoming guests and visitors and showcase this new-age take on hospitality,” said Thuthukile Moloto, the hotel’s General Manager.
