This week’s Project of the Week is the long-awaited Bedford Hotel, opening in Belfast’s Scottish Mutual Building next year.

Lengthy history

Derry’s Martin Property Group acquired the listed property last year, which had fallen into administration following the collapse of Signature Living in 2020.

Liverpool-based developer Lawrence Kenwright made a failed bid shortly after, with plans to develop it into a George Best themed hotel.

Independent English operator Focus Hotels has secured the management contract for the Bedford, and will run the property as a five-star hotel.

It will have 102 rooms, bars, restaurants and a ground-floor extension, according to planning documents.

Heritage property

According to Focus Hotels, “with its historical significance and architectural grandeur, the Edwardian building provides a striking backdrop for the creation of a distinctive hospitality experience, including a high-end restaurant and bar, in the heart of Northern Ireland’s capital”.

Devin Grosse, CEO of Focus Hotels, said securing the management contract for the hotel was a “significant achievement for Focus Hotels”.

“We are honoured to be part of this prestigious project and are committed to leveraging our expertise to craft an unparalleled guest experience,” he added.

“We look forward to contributing to the success of this iconic property.”
