Project of the Week: One&Only Moonlight Basin

Our latest spectacular project of the week is the One&Only brand’s US debut with a remote luxury ski retreat in Montana.

Situated on the northwest side of Montana’s iconic Lone Mountain in Big Sky, One&Only Moonlight Basin promises to showcase the vast 8,100-acre landscape while providing every modern amenity.

Scenic site

Featuring 360-degree mountain views bordered by huge tracts of protected land in the Yellowstone National Park, the resort will be thoughtfully located within one of the region’s most scenic and serene areas.

One&Only brand owner Kerzner International Holdings signed a deal with Lone Mountain Land Company to bring this project to life.

Lodge life

Designed by architect Olson Kundig, One&Only Moonlight Basin will include 73 guestrooms and suites in the main lodge, 19 secluded villas throughout the resort and a separate ski lodge.

The ski lodge will be connected by gondola to Big Sky’s skiing facilities with over 5,800 skiable acres, and the resort will provide access to mountain golf courses and outdoor opportunities.

Regional residence first

In addition, the estate will introduce the first community of One&Only private homes in the US, offering 62 private residences throughout the landscape.

The free-standing Olson Kundig-designed homes will offer a contemporary design, complete with glass walls to showcase Big Sky’s mountain ranges.

Blending into surroundings

Intimate in size, the architectural design of the resort respects the terrain and minimal impact will be made to the location’s ecosystem during development, and the property will seamlessly integrate into the landscape.

Featuring local art embracing textiles, fires and floor-to-ceiling windows, the aim is for guests to simultaneously feel connected to, yet protected from, the spectacular surroundings.

Like all properties in the One&Only collection, One&Only Moonlight Basin will focus on privacy, providing a hideaway within a choice of accommodations that are suitable for both couples and families.  An emphasis will be placed on outdoor living spaces to enjoy the natural mountain surroundings.

The resort will be home to a spa, while a cutting-edge fitness centre will feature both indoor and outdoor spaces, as part of the resort’s overall amenities that will evolve with the seasons.

Eating and meeting

The Montana site will offer indoor and outdoor dining experiences featuring fresh, local ingredients and internationally inspired cuisine. As a culinary destination, each restaurant at the resort will be defined by their own distinct ethos, design, and flavour.

The resort will also be suitable for corporate retreats or an intimate celebration. Outdoor spaces will be available to transform locations into private events with spectacular views.

Schedule slippage

Since the project was first announced last year, the opening date has slipped from 2024 to Q1 2025.

The addition of One&Only Moonlight Basin is part of the strategic growth for the One&Only portfolio, introducing resorts and residences in the world’s most incredible natural settings, buzzing urban centres, and exclusive communities of One&Only Private Homes. The brand’s first alpine resort, this continues the evolution of One&Only in one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.
