Work is progressing on the development of a ground-breaking new integrated ski resort in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

Four hotels will provide a base from which to experience Montigo Resort Shanghai, the ambitious integrated ski and snow park resort, when it completes in 2022. The record-breaking park will be operated by the team behind Ski Dubai. We find out more.

Snow on the way thanks to innovative Shanghai resort

Shanghai has a new offering on the horizon, an exciting prospect that will no doubt add to the city’s already booming hospitality landscape. Slated to open in 2022, Montigo Resort Shanghai will be an integrated resort focused around the central highlight of the world’s biggest indoor ski and snow park.

The project is a joint venture between property developer KOP, Shanghai Lujiazui Development Company and Shanghai Harbour City Development Company, and will aim to attract 3.2 million visitors a year, predominantly focusing on the domestic tourism market. Four hotels will also be housed within the development, providing accommodation for guests visiting this novel concept. The ski park will be run by Majid Al Futtaim, the brains behind the wildly successful Ski Dubai indoor ski and snow park.

“This is KOP’s largest project so far, and we are excited to work alongside our strong local partners to push new boundaries and introduce new and innovative concepts to the Chinese market. The large-scale mixed development will also offer opportunities for KOP to build new income streams, many of which are recurring in nature, for our sustainable growth going forward,” said Ong Chih Ching, executive chairman and executive director of KOP.

The ski’s the limit at Montigo Resort Shanghai

The integrated resort will be spread over an incredible 227,000 sq m, and will incorporate Montigo Resort Shanghai, a 1000+ key hotel that has ski-in/ski-out access, direct entry to ski slopes, and a variety of snow- and ski-themed F&B outlets. Montigo is KOP’s hospitality brand, and its four hotels in the Montigo Resort Shanghai are Montigo Luxe, Montigo Hotels, Montigo Residences and Montigo Ice. There will also be ample meeting, conference and events facilities spread over the complex, making the development ideal for business as well as leisure travellers.

The main attraction, of course, will be the Ski & Snow Park, a 90,000 sq m venue which will feature three ski slopes, including an Olympic-grade slope, a variety of ski runs and over 25 ski-related attractions. Apres-ski activities will also be encouraged, with numerous bars, restaurants and cafes promoting this quintessential element of ski culture. Last but not least, the complex will feature a state-of-the-art spa, fully equipped water park and performance venue.
