InterContinental Auckland, a key component of the One Queen Street development in New Zealand’s largest city, has won our latest Project of the Week title.
Benefitting from a privileged position on Auckland’s waterfront, this new InterContinental hotel promises to be a highlight of an ambitious regeneration scheme.
A privileged location
In late May 2021, Precinct Properties announced that it was about to start construction of One Queen Street following the completion of a comprehensive redesign, a year after deciding to defer the project due to the Covid19 crisis. The long-awaited scheme, which encompasses several distinct elements including InterContinental Auckland, is expected to be ready in late 2023.
Precinct Properties has appointed LT McGuinness to build out One Queen Street, which has a total project cost of NZ$305 million (US$212.6 million), on a fixed-price contract. The scheme was originally constructed in 1972, before being refurbished in 1998.
Luxury lifestyle and waterfront views
InterContinental Auckland, which will showcase the talents of architect Warren and Mahoney and interior designer AvroKO, will span floors six to 11 of the Green Star building. Floors 12 to 20, meanwhile, will accommodate 14,000 sq m of office space – and a rooftop bar will provide impressive waterfront views from level 21.
The hotel will house 139 guestrooms (previously 244 keys), along with a range of luxury facilities. From here, guests will be able to take in uninterrupted views of Waitemata Harbour and enjoy immediate access to an abundance of world-class retail and leisure options.
