A luxury hotel in restored heritage buildings is taking shape at the former Danske Bank headquarters for 2028

This week’s Project of the Week is coming together in the heart of Copenhagen. Four Seasons Laksegade Quarter Copenhagen is now under construction as part of one of the city’s most significant redevelopment projects. It will be the brand’s first hotel in the Nordic region, and it shows how heritage buildings can be given new life as a luxury address in a destination with growing international appeal.

Four Key Takeaways

The Hotel

Four Seasons Hotel Copenhagen is scheduled to open in 2028 with over 100 rooms, positioned in the 5-star luxury category. Rather than a new build, the hotel will occupy restored heritage buildings in the historic Laksegade Quarter. These buildings will be preserved and restored in line with heritage guidelines, combining the conservation of urban heritage with contemporary luxury hospitality.

The Scope of the Project

The hotel is part of the Laksegade Kuarteret project, located at the former headquarters of Danske Bank on Holmens Kanal. The project involves the transformation of 16 buildings with a total of 50,200 square meters. It is a mixed-use development: alongside the hotel, it includes office, retail, and public space. Construction began in March 2026 with the office and retail phase, followed by the hotel phase.

The Location

The hotel sits in the heart of Copenhagen, at Holmens Kanal 14 in the city center. The Laksegade Quarter has more than 400 years of history, but it has largely been closed to the public for around 150 years, mainly used by financial institutions. The redevelopment will reopen it to the public. Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, the Royal Danish Theatre, the Danish Parliament, and the National Bank of Denmark are all within walking distance.

The Team

Thylander Gruppen is the developer and Krook & Tjäder is the architect. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts will operate the hotel as a tenant, supported by an investor consortium.

Why It Matters

The hotel marks Four Seasons’ official entry into the Nordic region and its first hotel in Scandinavia. It adds a world-leading luxury hospitality brand to Copenhagen and strengthens the brand’s presence in Europe. The project reflects the continued strength of the luxury hospitality sector and the growing appeal of Copenhagen as a premier international destination.
