Project of the Week: Fairmont Port Douglas, Australia

Developed by Chiodo Corporation, this nature-inspired property that will mark Fairmont’s spectacular entry into Australia has won our latest Project of the Week title.

Located between the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, this first-of-its-kind hotel by Accor aims to connect guests with the elements, local culture and nature.

Sustainable and locally inspired design

Planned for a late-2023 debut, Fairmont Port Douglas promises to be quite unlike other luxury hotels, with its heartfelt celebration of the planet’s riches. In a nod to its position on the edge of two Unesco World Heritage Sites, the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, the property is being sustainably designed to protect as well as give back to the area.

Reflecting its strong environmental credentials, the hotel will be located in the world’s first certified ECO Destination, the Douglas Shire, which achieved Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Destination Certification in 2019 and won the Communities & Culture Award at the Sustainable Destinations Awards in 2020.

A connection to nature and culture

Overall, the exciting hotel will house 253 luxurious guestrooms, along with several restaurants and bars, and a decadent Fairmont Spa that offers treatments using traditional local ingredients.

These amenities will be joined by a treetop walk and panoramic event facilities, and everything is to be built around resort-style pools. Moreover, the entire Fairmont-branded hotel is designed to blend harmoniously with the surroundings, with plentiful green space and interiors providing lots of natural light. Butterfly nets above the children’s pool, tropical gardens and a lobby inspired by birds’ nests are also being promised.

While staying at Fairmont Port Douglas, guests will be able to snorkel on the reef, venture into the world’s oldest living rainforest and learn about Australia’s indigenous history.

Chiodo Corporation is developing the property, with Buchan Group and Jamiedurie working on the architecture and design.
