We take a look at the Clarion Hotel Draken Gothenburg scheme, which Nordic Hotels has high hopes for.

Construction started last year on one of Gothenburg’s most exciting hotel projects in recent times, Clarion Hotel Draken Gothenburg. We see how the project is progressing and take a look at what’s in store when it opens in the second quarter of 2022.

New cultural quarter to light up Gothenburg

The Swedish city of Gothenburg is looking forward to the completion of one of its most hotly anticipated hospitality projects, Clarion Hotel Draken Gothenburg. Ground broke on the project back in autumn 2019, and the ceremony was full of symbolism and showmanship, perhaps unsurprisingly given that the hotel will reside in Gothenburg’s new cultural quarter.

Forming part of the Masthuggskajen masterplan area, located in the Järntorget district, the property will be positioned as one of the key locations for conferences, events and meetings in the area. The hotel, which takes its name from the Draken (dragon) cinema, will be built on cinematic foundations, quite literally – a roll of film was thrown into the open building site as part of the ceremonial breaking of ground.

The project is being spearheaded by Nordic Hotels. Petter Stordalen, founder of Nordic Hotels, said: “Clarion Hotel Draken is a prestigious project in our portfolio. I am extremely proud to be able to participate in managing such an important landmark as the Draken cinema. Gothenburg is a growth city with fantastic potential and Nordic Choice Hotels has an ambition of doubling the number of hotels in the city. This journey has only just started.”

What to expect from Clarion Hotel Draken Gothenburg

Clarion Hotel Draken Gothenburg will take over an existing building, as well as adding on a new structure which, together, will bring an additional 470 hotel rooms to the city. As well as this, the complex will comprise ample meeting, conference and event facilities, and numerous F&B outlets including a jaw-dropping restaurant and sky bar located on the top two floors at the 34th and 35th storeys.

The hotel is being developed as part of a new quarter that will provide 1,300 new private residences and employment for around 6,000 workers, as well as entertainment and cultural venues, attracting both locals and visitors to this up-and-coming area of the city.
