The colourful ‘tread-light’ IHG brand Voco will make its debut in New Zealand with the 2021 opening of Voco Auckland City Centre, designed by SJB with sustainability at its core.

Located within one of Auckland’s tallest buildings, the forthcoming Voco hotel will share the site with another IHG brand, Holiday Inn Express.

IHG’s new dual-branded site

Upon opening in mid-2021, Voco Auckland City Centre will welcome guests to the upper floors of a 37-storey building at the corner of Albert and Wyndham Street. This 200-room hotel will be part of IHG’s dual-branded scheme, alongside the 294-room Holiday Inn Express Auckland City Centre on the lower floors. Each hotel will have its own branding and guest entrances, but some of the facilities are to be shared, providing visitors with greater choice.

In 2017, the building was slated to feature an Even Hotel on its upper floors. However, following the 2018 launch of Voco by IHG, it gradually became clear that this bright and sustainable brand would be a better fit for developer Pro-invest’s environmental ethos, as well as the laidback Kiwi spirit.

The signing of this new Voco hotel in January 2020 signified another step in the rapid growth of the 2018-launched brand, following openings in Australia’s Gold Coast, Yarra Valley, Hunter Valley, Melbourne and Sydney. Since launching, these properties have reached a host of sustainability milestones, such as recycling more than half a million plastic bottles to make Voco bedding, and having more than 300,000 bees produce honey and honeycomb for their restaurants.

Auckland’s bright new Voco hotel

In addition to embracing the brand’s sustainability initiatives, the four-star Voco Auckland City Centre will take on all of the elements characteristic of the Voco lifestyle. Guest rooms will be designed around the brand’s Me Time concept incorporating premium beds, superior showers, user-friendly technology and innovative lighting. These will be joined by an all-day restaurant and bar, as well as a guest fitness centre.

Designed by SJB, the property is to encapsulate a fresh, modern and natural aesthetic, bringing the outdoors inside, and incorporating playful and energising areas for working, socialising and dining. All of this is to come together to create a distinctive vibe in a convenient location at the heart of Auckland city centre.
