Meliá Hotels International will expand its Asian footprint in 2021 with the opening of Meliá Phuket Mai Khao, an exclusive luxury resort in one of Thailand’s most sought-after destinations.

Announced in April 2018, this stylish four-star scheme will combine a sublime Thai location overlooking the Andaman Sea with hospitality that’s distinguished by its Spanish touch. We take a closer look at what to expect from the idyllic new beach resort.

A growing presence in Thailand

Slated for an early 2021 debut, Meliá Phuket Mai Khao will bring the Meliá brand of hospitality to the shores of Mai Khao beach on Thailand’s largest island. Owned by developer Phuket Villa Group, the property promises to significantly strengthen Meliá’s presence in the country.

“It’s thrilling news that we are expanding our footprint into Phuket with Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand,” said Bernardo Cabot Estarellas, senior vice president for Meliá Hotels International in Asia Pacific, when the signing was originally confirmed.

“While tourism continues to be the driving force in the Phuket economy, we’re well-poised to bring our extensive experience in the resort segment to one of the most desired destinations in Asia. Partnering with Phuket Villa Group, who we share similar ethos and passion with, will assure us to achieve robust and sustainable growth and deliver an unparalleled experience to meet the seasoned guests’ desires.”

“We’re excited to embark on this partnership with Meliá Hotels International, the world’s largest resort hotel company, to capture the flourishing tourism market in Phuket,” added Maetapong Upatising, managing director of Phuket Villa. “Looking ahead, together with Meliá Hotels International, we have every confidence in bringing the best of hospitality to Phuket and setting the benchmark for hospitality in this beautiful island.”

A sanctuary on northern Phuket’s shores

The resort lies on the tranquil northern side of the island, overlooking a white-sand beach known for having tropical reef clusters just offshore, but still within easy reach of Phuket International Airport. Areas of interest and natural beauty close to here include Sirinat National Park, Lahm Him Pier and Royal Phuket Marina.

In total, the resort will encompass 101 private villas, each of which has its own private pool. These luxury hideaways will then be complemented by lush courtyards and spacious public areas with ocean views.

Interiors combining neutral colour schemes with touches of blue and contemporary wooden decor will reflect the focus that Meliá Hotels & Resorts has on wellness, giving the resort the feel of a coastal sanctuary. Some of the property’s biggest draws will include two pools, Meliá’s signature YHI Spa and a culinary offering that includes an all-day dining restaurant, a cosy lobby lounge and an inviting pool bar.

Both the architecture and interiors are the work of Thai design firm SODA, which has been behind a number of high-profile resorts across the APAC region.
