We take a closer look at plans by CitizenM, the bold Netherlands-based hotel chain, to open its first property in Chicago.
Bringing CitizenM’s distinct approach to affordable luxury to one of the largest cities in the US, this new hotel will span several floors of a landmark tower on North Michigan Avenue. We examine what details have been shared so far.
An ambitious new development for Chicago
Currently under construction, the 280-room CitizenM Chicago Downtown is expected to open in Q4 2021, according to our researchers. This new property will fill floors six through 15 of a 47-storey building south of the river, reports the Chicago Tribune, while also including 289 residential apartments and 25,000 sq ft of retail.
To realise the scheme, CitizenM has partnered with the building’s developers Magellan Development Group and Sterling Bay. Chicago-based bKL Architecture is leading the hotel’s architectural design, while Concrete in Amsterdam is overseeing the interiors.
Affordable luxury and bold design
The new hotel will integrate all the amenities needed by the modern traveller into smartly furnished guest rooms, including XL king-size beds with luxury bedding, an HD TV with streaming options and a library of on-demand movies, fast wifi and rain showers. Guests will also be able to adjust the ambience of the room by controlling the blinds, TV and lights via an in-room iPad.
To give the hotel a sense of place, the property’s aesthetic will draw inspiration from the local community; expect to see an eclectic collection of contemporary art, photography and other objects by local artists in striking modern interiors. Upon completion, the hotel will provide a convenient base for visiting local attractions like Millenium Park, the Chicago Riverwalk and the city’s Magnificent Mile, home to a host of upscale shops and restaurants.
