A new hotel near Ibiza’s famous San Antonio hotspot celebrates all things art deco, neon and kitsch. We check out this eye-catching new property.

Art deco in Paradiso

South Beach in Miami has long been a haunt of the rich and famous, who flock there for the art deco architecture and the beautiful people that line the Florida shoreline. Now, this energy has been channelled into a new hotel in Ibiza’s San Antonio bay, one of Europe’s premier playgrounds. The Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel is a wonderland of candy-coloured kitsch, neon strip lighting and quirky furniture that recalls the post-modern 80’s design of Memphis and the golden era of the 30’s in Miami. The volumes, facade and aesthetic of the hotel are all decidedly art deco, but the interiors marry this iconic architectural style with a zany dash of contemporary graphic art.

Art and art deco

One of the main selling points of the hotel is to offer a different guest experience for visitors to this party island, by allowing guests to immerse themselves in art through the carefully curated collection of illustrations, artworks and photography that line the walls of the reception area, lobby and individual guest rooms at the Paradiso. The Concept Hotel Group, which operates the property, says, “Devoted to art and contemporary creation, and borrowing inspiration from the aesthetics of MiMo – Miami Modern – the new hotel introduces a whole new way of visiting the island, surrounded by high-quality art.” Guests can even observe the habits of an artist in residence, who will be put up in a glazed room that sits within the lobby area, known as the “Zero Suite”. The collection is curated by artist and curator Iñaki Domingo, and photographer and filmmaker Diana Kunst. Artists in residence will have full control over their micro-dwelling, and be able to create artworks on or within this tiny studio.

Pastel paradise

Colour is one of the standout features of this hotel. Pastel shades of pink abound in the pool area, where the tiles used for the pool decking are a light shade of pink, and the circular bar is a candy-coloured dream. The guest rooms employ a bolder palette of oranges, yellows and turquoises, while the lobby goes for a combination of reds, greens and yellows. The overall effect is one of fun and friendliness, combined with a stellar art collection that will have guests mingling with each other as they pore over the various artworks that are dotted around the hotel.
