We find out more about this charming hotel.
NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market welcomes guests
Formerly the NH Carlton Amsterdam, the NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market has opened in this historic and iconic building following a six-month closure for renovations.
The building itself dates from the 1920s and is situated within the Dutch city’s historic centre. The 4-star hotel boasts 233 rooms and the renovation bridges the era it was built in with the needs and demands of today’s modern traveller.
Maarten Markus, Managing Director Northern Europe of NH Hotel Group, said of the project, “NH Carlton Amsterdam was a well-known hotel with a rich history dating back to the Olympic Games in 1928. We decided that this unique hotel would be the perfect addition to the NH Collection properties in Amsterdam after an extensive renovation.”
“The NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market is a fascinating building, located between channels and plazas, right next to the Flower Market. With its signature elegant yet contemporary touch it will continue to attract leisure guests as well as business travellers that look for the extraordinary NH Collection experience,” Mr Markus explained.
Dutch history, Spanish design
TBC Interiorismo, a Spanish interior design and architecture firm, are responsible for the revival of the building’s interior. They have previously collaborated with NH Hotels on nine other properties, including hotels in Madrid and Berlin.
The concept for the interior is based on Amsterdam’s industrial and urban heritage, as well as its flower market and flower fields.
“The design brings the city inside the hotel, starting off the nearby floral atmosphere that invades all public areas. We use textures and materials with big scale floral printings, to magnify, creating interesting design elements,” says Mercedes Isasa from TBC Interiorismo.
“We also make use of Moooi’s design, a Dutch landmark firm in contemporary design, whose products are exhibited in every design forum worldwide. An example is the flowery mural behind the reception. The tapestry is a design by Marcel Wanders, co-founder of the firm with Casper Vissers, and has given a new twist on the traditional Dutch still life flower paintings,” Ms Isasa explains.
NH Hotels expansion in 2019 and beyond
NH Hotels currently operates 80 hotels in 15 countries as part of its NH Collection brand. The group’s long-term growth strategy is focused on expanding the upper-upscale segment, which this new Amsterdam property is a part of.
“With the NH Collection brand, we reinforce our leadership in strategically important destinations such as Amsterdam, Munich and New York. We recently signed an agreement for another property in Rome, NH Collection Fori Imperiali, which will be our 13th hotel under our premium brand in Italy,” says Isidoro Martínez de la Escalera, NH Hotel Group’s Chief Marketing Officer.
“Our new NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market highlights the unstoppable growth of the NH Collection brand in the Netherlands and Europe, considering our upcoming openings in Germany and Belgium in Q 3 this year,” Mr Martínez de la Escalera elaborates.
