Channeling Italian cinema
Venice’s Dorsoduro neighbourhood has welcomed a new hotel – the NH Venezia Rio Novo. Located in an arresting Rationalist building that stands out from the more classical architecture that is typical of Venice, the NH Venezia Rio Novo is a four-star property that takes its cues from the giants of Italian cinema and film.
The city has a long history and involvement with the film industry, given that it hosts the Venice Film Festival every year, which attracts the biggest names in cinema and celebrity to the shores of this iconic Italian island city. From its conception and erection in the late 1950’s, this building has been reimagined over the years by famous Italian architects including Angelo Scattolin, Luigi Vietti, Pier Luigi Nervi and Cesare Pea, all of whom have been influenced to some degree by the nation’s well known film industry.
A new take on a classic design
This 144-room property has been given a new lease of life, with a fresh new look that responds to the classic lines of the rationalist geometries, while at the same time conjuring up contemporary images, as well as those from traditional Italian cinema. The hotel is adorned with photographs and keepsakes from the most well known Italian films, whether it be in the guest rooms or in the common areas, and guests can even leaf through signed journals and archival materials in the specialised on site library.
The decoration internally echoes the minimalism of the exterior, with neutral shades and tones proliferating throughout to create a calming environment. The hotel’s garden is open to the public, and is the perfect place to enjoy a Venetian evening complete with some outdoor cinema. The hotel also benefits from an on-site gym, conference and meeting facilities and a delicious restaurant and bar which serves up authentic Italian fare.
