Mexico overview: Close to 40,000 new rooms due to be launched [Infographic]

With 131 properties in the pipeline, Mexico’s hotel market is growing quickly and reacting to growing numbers of inbound travellers.

Home to one of North America’s fastest-growing hotel markets, Mexico will see 131 properties launch in the coming years, adding 39,538 rooms to the market.

We find out which regions will see the most growth and which brands are expanding most quickly.

Busy years are ahead

2020 will be a busy year for Mexico’s hotel industry with 58 openings slated to bring 14,235 rooms. 2021 also looks busy with 35 hotels and 10,759 rooms in the pipeline.

Another 14 properties are planned for 2022 while things will slow down a bit in 2023 with only 4 launches. For 2024 and beyond 15 more hotels are underway.

With 81 of the 126 hotels aiming for 5-star certification, the focus in Mexico is clearly on high-end properties at the moment. The remaining 45 properties will be in the 4-star category.

Mexico’s hotel development hubs

The well-known resort destination of Cancun leads the pack with 21 planned openings and 13,227 new rooms. Mexico City comes in second with 10 launches and 1,696 rooms.

Tulum and Cabo San Lucas, two other popular beachside visitor magnets known for their white sandbanks and outstanding resorts, will see 6 new properties each. Tulum, however, will boast 2,021 new rooms, which is almost twice as many as Cabo San Lucas’ 1,121 rooms.

Top hotel brands expanding in Mexico

Hampton by Hilton takes the lead with 6 new hotels and 780 rooms, closely followed by SLS Hotels with 5 properties and 714 rooms.

Dreams Resorts & Spas has 4 large properties in the pipeline which will add 2,065 rooms to the brand’s portfolio. Breathless Resorts & Spas will launch 3 new resorts of similar size, bringing 1,429 rooms to the market.

The Ritz-Carlton brand closes out the top 5 with 3 planned properties and 481 rooms.

Noteworthy hotels under development in Mexico

Guests are invited to vacation like stars at the 400-room Hotel Planet Hollywood Cancun which will open in Q1 2020. Set right on the beach, this property is brimming with Hollywood memorabilia, themed experiences, a state-of-the-art spa and numerous dining venues and bars. A kids club, a fully equipped gym and other deluxe amenities complete the experience on the Costa Mujeres.

Set in Tulum, the Live Aqua Beach Resort Chemuyil will offer 340 luxurious rooms from early 2021. It’s surrounded by tropical vegetation and will inspire guests to experience their stay with all their senses. Sophisticated design, tasteful artwork and impressive facilities including numerous pools, dining venues and an expansive wellness centre will make a stay here unforgettable.

Los Cabos’ Golden Zone will get a new hotel before Q1 2020 is over. The 260-room Villa la Valencia Cabo San Lucas features luxury suites, studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments as well as penthouses. This new resort will join the Villa Group’s collection of existing properties in Los Cabos, including Villa del Palmar Cabo San Lucas, Villa La Estancia and Villa del Arco. The crown jewel of the property will be its signature reef-inspired pool, which will showcase numerous in-pool aquariums with fish and sea life indigenous to the area.

The Cachet Deluxe Los Cabos will be part of a dual-branded hotel development which will also include a Cachet Beach property. Slated to open in early 2020, this property will feature 204 rooms and suites right on the beach. Five restaurants including the brand’s signature upscale Chinese venue, an expansive pool landscape and a beach club will be part of the hotel’s amenities. Over 1,800 sqm of meetings and events space will create appeal for businesses looking for an exceptional event venue.
