Accor’s four star hotel brand Mercure is continuing its development pace, adding to its international network of more than 900 hotels in over 60 countries.

The group believes that the brand’s current standings make it the second largest in its upper midscale segment worldwide, excluding North America, in terms of number of hotels.

Geographical spread

Mercure already has a strong presence in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Australia, and, according to data from THP, the brand’s forthcoming high end developments will take place across at least 25 countries.

There will be at least 38 additional properties entering the marque’s stable over the coming years, totalling more than 6,100 keys.

From Romans to Romania

Inspired by Mercury, the Roman god of travellers, Mercure is now steering its journey further throughout both Asia and Europe in particular.

The THP database contains details of at least 16 Asian projects, closely matched by European developments with a current total of 14. African and South American additions number four apiece.

Individual country count is topped by Romania, with at least five forthcoming sites, while a group of nations are all on two each, including the UK, Poland, South Korea and the Philippines.

Brand profile

Since its founding in 1973, Mercure has aimed to combine high-quality standards with a true take on each hotel’s locality. Everything from the decorative design to a passion for local food and beverage discoveries is rooted in the features of each destination.

Interiors are designed to be modern and reflect the neighbourhood’s architecture, while the brand ensures it integrates its hotel façade into the local surroundings. The heart of each hotel is the social hub, while at select locations, authentic gardens take inspiration from traditional floras.

Upcoming openings

Upcoming premium openings are currently due to peak this year, with at least 12 sites scheduled. The pace looks to be dipping slightly next year, with six properties on the slate, but rises again in 2025 with another nine deliveries. The remaining 11 are either scheduled for further in the future or have yet to receive a completion date.

Projects to keep an eye on over the next few years include the first internationally branded hotel in the historic port city of Mokpo, South Korea, the 235 room Mercure Ambassador Mokpo. Opening in 2025, the hotel will feature a restaurant and bar, a 500-seat convention and meetings facility, fitness centre, pool and a kid’s club.

And on the eastern edge of Europe, Mercure Telavi Resort will open in 2024, in Telavi, Georgia. The four-star hotel will house 124 comfortable rooms and various wellness and dining facilities. The property’s infrastructure will also feature meeting facilities for business events and parking.
