At our recent TOPHOTELPROJECTS World Tour event, which was held in The H Hotel Dubai on September 19th 2017, we met Alexis SG Delprat. Delprat is CEO of his own organisation, Tabah Capital AE. He set up his own company just over a year ago, using the experience he gained while working in the advisory industry to establish the business. Delprat’s background within hospitality advisory and consulting was often focused in the UAE itself, whether it was when he was working in hospitality advisory roles with companies in London or France, so he already has a strong connection to the region and was excited to be back in Dubai for the World Tour event.
Delprat clearly enjoys a challenge, and his cross-cultural experience working in different countries and in numerous languages served him well in his career highlight. He says that being at the negotiating table while trying to strike a deal between a Saudi client who was pursuing the acquisition of a trophy property in Paris. The deal was so secret that Delprat had to stay in a room with the two parties until an agreement was reached, but the Saudi’s didn’t speak French, and not only that, but the American company on the other side of the table struggled with understanding the priorities and philosophy of the Saudi company. Despite all his years of expertise in hospitality advisory, Delprat’s strength in this matter was being able to bridge the cultural and linguistic divide, but without him the deal wouldn’t have ended up becoming the largest single asset transaction in 2009, something of which he is rightly proud, being that these transactions rarely happen between private clients and government agencies.
Insofar as industry challenges go, Delprat says that for him one particular obstacle that he has had to face is that of the upcoming 2020 World Expo that will be held in the Dubai. His original idea was to invest locally, but markets conditions, local parameters and a lack of funding from local banks has meant that he has had to move his investment operations to niche markets in Europe, but this seems to be going well, and he is planning to announce the opening of a new Marriott Moxy hotel in Lisbon.
In the next five to ten years, Delprat thinks that the millennial market will be calling the shots within the industry. He also confirms the outlook that many trends are pointing towards, which is a focus on guest experience, rather than the traditional hotel stay. He says that people are looking for excitement during their stay, and for memories that they will take with them for the time afterwards.
