At the recent TOPHOTELPROJECTS World Tour event in London, we met Caroline Cundall, director of interior design with InterContinental Hotels Group, IHG. Cundall has a great deal of experience doing interior design work in the hospitality industry, having previously spent 15 years with GA Design in London. Cundall is somewhat unique within the industry, as her original background comes from the fashion world. Cundall made the jump to interior design when she moved from New Zealand to London in the early ‘90s, describing the move as a logical progression.
As for the highlights of her career, Cundall points to the opportunities she has had to see the world and practice her craft overseas, especially in Japan, where she developed a love for the people and the culture’s attention to detail and organization. In terms of biggest challenges facing the industry, Cundall emphasizes that hospitality work would benefit from fostering more of a work life balance for those who practice it. She says corporate jobs tend to do much better with this, while interior design studios operate with more taxing deadlines and late hours.
When it comes to the outlook of the hospitality industry, Cundall sees ecological issues as a major factor. In her work, she often keeps environmental efficiency in mind, doing her best to use local materials and strong green concepts. It’s not just her. Throughout the industry she sees others migrating in the same direction, a migration she expects will continue.
