Marriott targets Caribbean and Latin American growth after 300th opening
The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City
Marriott International has pledged to expand further following the launch of The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City – with our data showing it has a raft of active developments across the region.
One of the world’s biggest hotel groups is ramping up its footprint in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Marriott’s milestone in Mexico City
Set within a 58-storey skyscraper along the Paseo de Reforma in the heart of the Mexican capital, The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City’s debut marks a significant milestone for Marriott International as the company’s 300th property in the Caribbean and Latin America. The scheme, which boasts interiors by Chapi Chapo Design, features 153 guestrooms and suites, The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, The Ritz-Carlton Spa complete with six treatment rooms, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant Samos, a heated indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and more than 4,300 sq ft of meeting space.
The opening means that Marriott’s presence in the Caribbean and Latin America now spans over 63,000 rooms, 36 countries and territories, and 21 of its 30 global brands.
“This momentous accomplishment is a reflection of our strong relationships in the Caribbean and Latin America and the trust our owners and franchisees continue to have in Marriott, our extraordinary portfolio of 30 brands and Marriott Bonvoy, our award-winning travel programme,” said Federico Greppi, chief financial officer and VP franchise operations and owner relations of Marriott International’s Caribbean and Latin America region. “Our commitment to the future of the Caribbean and Latin American tourism industry is unwavering, and we continue to pursue our vision of growth in this vibrant part of the world, aiming to provide a wide variety of experiences for all travellers who wish to explore it.”

Rapid development in Mexico and the Dominican Republic
Over on the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, our dedicated researchers are tracking dozens of live Marriott schemes across the Caribbean and Latin America that underline the scale of the company’s regional ambitions.
In terms of active newbuilds that are currently under construction, for example, we’re closely monitoring progress on the likes of W São Paulo in Brazil (due to open in Q2 2023), The St Regis Cap Cana Resort & Residences in the Dominican Republic (Q4 2023) and The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Riviera Nayarit in Mexico (Q4 2022). And we’re seeing particularly strong activity levels in Mexico, where the group has seven projects on the go, and the Dominican Republic, where it has three.
Marriott launched its first hotel outside the US in the Mexican city of Acapulco in May 1969. At the end of September 2021, its total development pipeline in the Caribbean and Latin America encompassed 112 hotels and 18,205 rooms.
“The Caribbean and Latin America continues to be a growing region,” said Laurent de Kousemaeker, chief development officer, Caribbean and Latin America, Marriott International. “We are having a robust year of signings as well as openings, and are seeing particular strength in conversions, as owners and franchisees of independent hotels and resorts turn to our trusted brands as they look to strengthen their sales and distribution channels.”
