Marriott International has announced a goal of opening 20 new hotels in India by the end of 2020. This is a key part of Marriott’s expansion plan in India.

At present, Marriott has 120 hotels in India. They represent 16 brands with the latest edition to the portfolio being The Ritz-Carlton, Pune. Company spokespeople say the new hotels will be a mix of brands as well.

“We will get closer to 140 hotels in India by the end of 2020. Typically we open between 15 to 30 hotels every year,” Marriott International, South Asia Senior Vice President Neeraj Govil told PTI.

Marriott’s expansion plan for in India

The Ritz-Carlton, Pune is a 198-room property as is the second hotel under this brand to launch in India.

All told, it is also the 99th Ritz-Carlton hotel worldwide. When asked about Marriott’s business model in India, Govil said, “We follow the management agreement and franchise agreement. It is a model we follow globally and in India.”

As such, most of the hotels under development by Marriott in India currently will be under the management model. The company, however, will continue to expand its franchise side as well.

Marriott’s ambitious expansion plans in India are indicative of the country undergoing a tourism boom. By investing now, the hospitality giant hopes to reap the rewards of entering this quickly growing market early.
