Marriott International is seeking to deepen their relationship with US retail and entertainment organisationSimon. Simon’s malls and shopping centres will now feature more hotels by Marriott, and five new hotels are planned for the retails centres over the next few years. We find out more.

Marriott and Simon become firm partners

Partnering with other industries has always been a solid bet for the hotel industry. As the face of an industry that is constantly changing, hoteliers and groups are having to think outside the box to in order to maintain their offering and continue to attract guests. So it makes sense that Marriott, a group that is always at the frontline of innovation, has decided to deepen their partnership with Simon, a company that owns numerous shopping malls all across the US. Marriott and Simon have announced their intention to open five new Marriott hotels across different brands over the coming years. The hotels will be strategically located in areas where there is already heavy tourist traffic. Two will open in Florida, while New York, Texas and Tennessee will see one new hotel each. The new hotels will be as follows: AC Hotel by Marriott at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Florida; an AC Hotel by Marriott at Dadeland Mall in Miami; a Courtyard by Marriott at Wolfchase Galleria in Memphis; a Residence Inn at Roosevelt Field on Long Island; and a Fairfield Inn & Suites at Firewheel Town Center in Garland, Texas.

Established centres prime location for hotels

Established centres of commerce and retail are becoming more and more popular with hoteliers, who know they can take advantage of the existing footfall to fill up their properties. Eric Jacobs, Chief Development Officer, Marriott International, elaborates on this, saying, “With consumers increasingly gravitating toward walkable, mixed-use communities, opening new hotels alongside Simon’s thriving retail destinations is an important part of Marriott International’s growth strategy in North America. Simon’s centres provide leisure and business travellers alike with access to shopping, restaurants, entertainment and an array of unique experiences outside their door, providing the perfect complement for our select-service brands such as AC by Marriott and Residence Inn.” Marriott already has 15 properties associated with Simon’s centres, but for Simon’s part, the partnership dovetails into a strategy to add more experiential aspects to their complexes. This has also involved improvements to their common areas, such as food courts and plazas.
