Marriott International has opened the Marriott Kampala, launching its eponymous hotel brand in Uganda, as the group looks for more opportunities to expand across the African continent.

The hotel offers a choice of 181 rooms and suites, with supporting facilities including expansive meetings and events rooms, plus six restaurants and bars, plus a relaxing outdoor pool area. In common with many hotels in expanding African cities, the property also features 96 serviced apartments, planned to support guests booking extended stays. These are being marketed as the Marriott Executive Apartments Kampala.

A Base for Exploring the City

The new development is situated ideally for those needing to stay close to the city’s business and governmental offices, while also acting as the perfect base for those seeking out the city’s cultural attractions. It is around 40 kilometres from Entebbe International Airport, which has connections world-wide from Uganda.

“This multi-branded property is well positioned to serve Kampala’s growing business, diplomatic, MICE and leisure travel sectors,” commented Johan Cronjé, Marriott’s regional vice president for Sub-Saharan Africa.” As Uganda’s tourism and business sectors continue to evolve, we see increasing demand for hospitality experiences that cater to a broad range of traveller needs.”

With this new opening, Marriott now offers stays at seven hotels across Uganda, featuring five of the group’s brands. While six of the properties are located around Kampala, the Protea brand also offers a hotel in Entebbe, on the Lake Victoria shores.

For Marriott in Africa, 2026 is something of a banner year, with still eight more hotels to open through the back end of the year. The momentum is building, with the Top Hotel Projects database showing more than a dozen more launches planned, across the continent, in 2027.

The group has also just opened the JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Kenya, a destination far from the traditional hotel offering, with two bedroom tents for guests, and the opportunity to stay out in the wild, while enjoying a luxury hotel experience. Also just opened is the Villa Sahrai Casablanca, an urban stay in Morocco that has listed under Marriott’s Design Hotels collection brand.

Upcoming openings include two more hotels in Morocco, and a dual property development in Madagascar. The Moroccan properties are both in Marrakech, with the largest being the 130 room St. Regis Marrakech Resort. South east of the city centre, the property is part of the Assoufid development, and will include a spa, conference centre and ballroom.

Additions Large and Small

In contrast, a smaller boutique project, Amerruk, Marrakech will join Marriott’s Autograph Collection. In Madagascar, there is the Delta Hotel Antananarivo, which will have 150 rooms, in a co-located development alongside the smaller, 80 room Protea Hotel by Marriott Antananarivo.

Another landmark project nearing completion is in South Africa. There, the group is preparing to open the Edition Hotel Quay 7 Cape Town. A 142 room new build, it sits on in an enviable location, providing guests with views across the waterfront and super yacht marina, with the backdrop of the region’s famous Table Mountain.
