Following the most extensive restoration in its 110-year history, the opulent Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid is now taking reservations from 15 March 2021 onwards.

Originally designed and built under the watchful eye of legendary hotelier Cesar Ritz in 1910, Madrid’s iconic Hotel Ritz is set to reopen under the Mandarin Oriental banner in spring 2021 following an ambitious three-year overhaul. We take a closer look at this mammoth project.

A century-old icon returned to its former glory

“We are delighted to be able to open our doors again to the city of Madrid and the world, and look forward to welcoming guests to this beautiful and historic hotel, which is poised to reclaim its place as one of the most iconic hotels in Europe,” said Greg Liddell, general manager of Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid.

Perched on the leafy Plaza de la Lealtad, in the city’s ‘Golden Triangle of Art’, the stately Belle Époque pile has been reinstated by Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz and French interior design firm Gilles & Boissier, which have preserved the spirit of the original building while firmly bringing it into the 21st century. As such, a number of valuable artistic pieces from the hotel’s collection – such as crystal chandeliers, antique paintings and sculptures – will be incorporated into the design.

Alongside 153 guest rooms will be 53 suites, including two ensconced in the top-floor turrets, and sprawling Royal and Presidential suites with views of Museo Nacional del Prado. Also with the same views, the ballroom and function spaces will be restored to their former glory, once again ready to host grand weddings, private dinners and parties.

A vibrant culinary destination

Meanwhile, the five restaurants and bars – led by Michelin-starred chef Quique Dacosta – include his own signature dining room overlooking the famous hotel garden, along with the art-filled Palm Court, an all-day dining and afternoon tea venue whose spectacular glass dome has been reconstructed after 80 years.

Among the high-end leisure and wellness facilities on offer are a heated indoor swimming pool, a vitality pool, experience showers, a steam room and a fitness centre.

Coming soon will be the unveiling of various partnerships with local artists, creators, artisans and brands, which will establish the hotel as a destination in its own right and celebrate the important cultural and societal role it has always held in the Spanish capital.
