Mama Shelter brings its playful spirit to Rome
by Lauren Jade Hill | 06 Aug 2021 | Hotel Openings, Projects
The hip lifestyle brand founded by the Trigano family has debuted its first Italian property, the 217-room Mama Shelter Roma, just a short walk from the Vatican in the Eternal City.
Combining shared fun with affordability and exceptional service, Mama Shelter properties are designed to offer an eccentric, fun and accessible approach to hospitality, and its latest site in Rome is no exception.
An inspiring location
Located in the Prati district of Rome, on the right bank of the Tiber, Mama Shelter Roma sits within an area known for its large avenues and art-nouveau buildings packed with trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques.
The new hotel is intended to be an urban refuge as well as a gastronomic address, while also being a welcoming space for doing business. Plus it houses the brand’s first ever spa, complete with indoor swimming pool, sauna, hammam and fitness centre.
“Mama Roma will be located next to the Vatican and only three metro stops from the historical city centre,” said Serge Trigano, founder of Mama Shelter. “All aspects of our identity will be found in this Mama: the restaurants, the rooftop, the designed bedrooms, the colourful lobby and in addition: a spa and its indoor swimming pool. We have added a library to offer our customers a sample of the most magical Italian literature and art.”
Bold design and vibrant lifestyle venues
Bold design distinguishes each part of Mama Shelter Roma, from mosaic floors to ceiling artwork by graphic designer and artist Beniloys.
Mama Design Studio came up with the design for each of the hotel’s 217 rooms, which are spread across six floors, with amenities ranging from a king-size bed and 55-inch smart TV to organic bath products by French organic cosmetics specialist Absolution. The Accor-backed hotel brand’s signature cartoon character masks also hang on the bedside lamps.
The property’s dining outlets invite guests to sample typical local cuisine like wood-oven pizzas, along with Mama Shelter’s international signature dishes, in convivial spaces incorporating giant communal tables. These dining outlets are then joined by a rooftop venue offering eye-catching views out over the city, a solarium, an island bar, a beer corner and a snack kiosk.
Additional facilities here include two meeting spaces with a maximum capacity of 50 people and a Breakroom featuring a giant foosball table and an outdoor space for playing ping pong and bocce.
Mama Shelter was founded by the Trigano family, of Club Med fame, in 2008. Accor first acquired a stake in the business in 2014 to further develop the concept and expand its global footprint.
