Kempinski in the Caribbean
This is not the European hotel group’s first foray into the Caribbean market. Last year, they debuted in Cuba, with Cuba’s first five star luxury hotel, the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana.
This hotel is located in the heart of Havana’s old city, just moments away from the coast and situated among the city’s many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The historic building in which the Cuban capital’s Kempinski hotel is housed was a former department store, which has been lovingly converted into a luxury hotel that has kept many of the original features of the building.
Management at Cabrits Resort
An experienced management team has been put together for the Cabrits Resort and Spa, headed up by Michael J. Schoonewagen as general manager, who is an expert hotelier with vast management experience in luxury hotels across the world, including in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean. Xavier Destribats, COO The Americas for Kempsinski, said: “We are delighted to welcome Michael to the Kempinski family. With his successful track-record of managing luxury resort properties in pioneering destinations, and his focused expertise in the luxury segment, I am confident that Michael will build on our considerable momentum in the region with the opening of Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski Dominica next year.” Schoonewagen spoke of his enthusiasm for his new role, saying, “It is a great privilege to join Kempinski and lead this exciting development in Dominica. I have long admired the pioneering spirit and cultural empathy of Kempinski as a luxury heritage brand, and look forward to building on these roots to create the ultimate luxury destination in the Caribbean.”
