Every year, Sleep & Eat has a new theme, selected to amplify the zeitgeist of the age and for 2019 the subject is “Social FlexAbility”. “Hospitality holds a significant key to combatting social disconnection,” says Mark Gordon, Director of Sleep & Eat. “By inviting operators, developers and designers to contribute to the conversation at Sleep & Eat, we are offering a unique opportunity for the industry to create a blueprint for the future.”
The ambitious 2019 programme scales new heights with an international exhibition showcasing the latest design-led products from over 160 suppliers, a free-to-attend two-day Conference, the ever-popular Development Roundtables and more immersive pop-ups than ever before, each one uniquely designed for the event.
The Place to Do Business
As regular visitors to Sleep & Eat can vouch, the Exhibition is the place where both established and up-and-coming manufacturers choose to launch their collections. It is the show where new creative solutions are found, and business is done.
Ammique, the most technologically advanced bed in the world, will be showcased on stand J50 for visitors to experience its unique mattress-free sleep system. Hoteliers will have the additional opportunity to win the display bed for a free, six-month trial.
Northern Lights will showcase a bespoke screen crafted especially for Sleep & Eat and will be giving away one of its bespoke light fittings to the winner of a photo competition on Instagram @nl_lighting. Visit stand D72 and don’t forget to take a photo!
Visitors will have a unique opportunity to put Kaldewei’s steel enamel to the test using a wire brush, a Bunsen burner, and nail varnish (stand B40). “Kaldewei is delighted to be exhibiting again at Sleep & Eat 2019”, – says Adam Teal, Head of Sales, Kaldewei UK. “The event gives us a great opportunity to showcase our latest recyclable steel enamel bathroom solutions to the international hospitality sector and demonstrate our presence within international projects worldwide.”
The award-winning bathroom products company Bette (stand B84) will also be inviting visitors to put its premium steel-titanium alloy to the test, this time with a hammer, as well as nail varnish and fire.
Sunbury Design, a leading supplier of contract fabrics, will be launching Perception collection in collaboration with renowned print designer Amelia Graham. Visit stand E81 for the chance to meet the designer on Day One.
Hansgrohe (stand J40) will be launching Rainfinity range and will be offering an ongoing demonstration of its elegant new bathroom solution throughout the show.
The Conference: Game Changers from Around the Globe
Christoph Hoffmann, CEO of 25 Hours Hotels, in London to receive this year’s Outstanding Contribution award from AHEAD Europe, will begin proceedings on the second day of the Conference. In his presentation, ‘The Tales of a Storyteller-Hotelier’, the charismatic CEO will discuss the ups and downs of his journey with 25 Hours Hotels, capturing moments of joy from tales of wonder and fantasy, and considering if and how expansion, moving beyond European borders and partnering with Accor has affected the core essence of 25Hours.
Amar Lalvani, CEO of Standard International, will open the Conference on Day One, fresh from the completion of his much-anticipated Standard Hotel in London. With plans to quadruple the company’s footprint to 20 properties in the coming years, Lalvani will be flying in from New York to share his insights on tackling the challenging issue of how to continue running the group as a platform for creativity.
Josh Wyatt, the driving-force behind NeueHouse, the U.S. based provider of collaborative workspace, and previously the visionary behind Generator Hostels, will share his opinions in conversation with Conference Curator, Heleri Rande, considering how creativity and design can act as financial drivers for investors. Wyatt admits to being shocked by the many executives who still don’t appreciate the importance of design. “I think that as we enter into an era of increasing digitisation, design is ever more important. You can build a somewhat successful company without; but you can build a great company with longevity if you understand that design is the physical foundation for your customers’ emotional experience,” he says.
Johannes Torpe, the Danish design activist, former Chief Creative Director of Bang & Olufsen and advocate for an unrestrained and intuitive approach to design as well as life in general, will lead the ‘Above’ session. Fifty years ago, human beings first stepped on the moon. It’s taken half a century but now we are close to launching space tourism. Torpe will consider what the future holds for space tourism and how to go about creating the “unearthly” on Earth

At the Table with Hospitality Influencers
The Development Roundtables, one of the most eagerly anticipated Conference sessions, will offer new opportunities for delegates to talk directly with decision makers at the forefront of our evolving industry.
This year, the table hosts will be Philip Lassman, Accor’s VP Development North Europe; Irene Hoek, Vice President of Global Residential Development at Rosewood Hotels; Laura Brinkmann, Vice President at Brookfield; Richard Fewings, Senior Vice President of Design & Construction at Highgate; Philip Camble, Director at Whitebridge Hospitality; Alex Phillips, Property Director of GLH Hotels; Charles Cresser, Development Director at SACO; Elena Sainz De La Peña, Business Development Director at CBRE Spain; and Maria Adamo, Global Development Manager at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
Organised and moderated by Daniel Englender, Managing Director of Benjamin West, the Development Roundtables will take place at 17:00 on 19th November in the Conference hall. Get there early to secure your seat!
Unique Pop Ups
This year, not only will the event feature four concept guestrooms together with a restaurant and a bar installation and the perennial Sleeper Bar, there will be two further pop ups never before featured at Sleep & Eat. The Hub, a coworking space, is being created by the London studio of Wilson Associates, and the VIP Lounge is the design of Moscow-based MEGRE INTERIORS. Named Gather by its designers, the Lounge will transform the original oak panelled Olympia Club Room into a whimsical flora and fauna-inspired space.

Sleep & Eat 2019 will take place in the National Hall, Olympia London, on 19th-20th November. The show will be open from 10.00 am on Tuesday 19th with a networking evening drinks reception until 20.30 pm, and from 10.00 am – 18.00 pm on Wednesday 20th.
