Is Marriott really planning to build a 26-story hotel in 90 days?
Putting the pieces together to form the new AC Hotel New York NoMad
In a single word: yes, and the world’s largest hotel chain is planning on making it the world’s tallest modular hotel, dubbed the AC Hotel New York NoMad.
Marriott International has for some time now held the title of the largest hotel chain in the world.
Soon it will have another international achievement to claim: Marriott is building the world’s tallest modular hotel. Oh, and it’s building it in just 90 days. Dubbed the AC Hotel New York NoMad, the property is scheduled to open next year.
How, you may wonder, is any of this possible? It’s a natural question, and fortunately, the hotel giant recently shared some insights into it via the hotel’s website.
More about history’s fastest-built hotel
Once completed, the AC Hotel New York NoMad, which will be the world’s tallest modular hotel, will have 168 rooms.
That in itself is somewhat common. What is special about these rooms is that each one of them will have been prefabricated in a factory in Poland.
This means all rooms will have been built off-site before being shipped to New York and trucked to the property’s location in the city. The journey’s last leg will happen at night, so as not to cause major traffic upsets due to the oversized containers.
Once unpacked, the rooms will be snapped into place quickly, as if they were giant Lego blocks. Okay, it’s not that simple, but that is the general idea.
With all that in mind, let’s take a look at the construction process…
Building a modular hotel
This quote from Eric Jacobs, Marriott International’s chief development officer North America select and extended-stay brands, is perhaps the best insight into the what, why, and how of this interesting new property’s construction:
“In North America, the construction process hasn’t changed significantly in 150 years and it’s ripe for innovation,” Jacobs said in a statement.
“The world’s tallest modular hotel, in one of the world’s greatest destinations will act as a game-changing symbol to ignite even greater interest in modular construction among the real estate and lending industries.”
The lobby and restaurant for the new hotel will be built the standard way. The rooms and the rooftop bar, however, will all be prefab. Once completed, the property will be in New York City at the corner of 30th Street and 6th Avenue.
The most stunning part of it, however, is that construction will start in the fall and finish in just three months.
Finally, it should be noted that this type of modular construction is not entirely new within the New York City hotel market.
