IHG’s luxury brand has entered a new country with the opening of InterContinental Baku, a 128-room newbuild scheme inspired by the celebrated Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi.

This prestigious property pairs the InterContinental experience with views over the Caspian Sea, the harbour and Baku’s iconic Flame Towers.

InterContinental’s literary inspiration

InterContinental Baku’s façade nods to the city’s oil-boom architecture, originating from a period of rapid economic growth in the 19th century, with the rest of the luxury property’s design reflecting the region’s landscape, history and culture. Combining international know-how with cultural heritage, the InterContinental property also introduces guests to the poems of medieval polymath Nizami Ganjavi, who was born in Azerbaijan in the 12th century; Ganjavi’s poems helped inspire the names of various elements of the property, from the spa and meeting spaces to the restaurant.

Pawel Czerwienka, general manager of InterContinental Baku, said: “As the world’s first international luxury hotel brand, with 75 years of pioneering travel across the globe, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has proudly become an iconic symbol of sophistication and worldliness. The brand is renowned for weaving modern luxury design through its collection of iconic properties and we can’t wait for guests to live the InterContinental Life experience at the brand-new InterContinental Baku.”

Wellness and local cuisine

The hotel houses seven floors of guest accomodation, along with an all-day dining restaurant offering local and Mediterranean cuisine, and a spa with hammam and indoor pool. Club InterContinental is found on the mezzanine floor, providing services such as private check-in alongside breath-taking views over the Baku Gulf.

Each of the 128 guestrooms, including six junior suites, fuses luxury with technology and comfort, featuring workspace and smart touch panels. The two-bedroom presidential suite also comes with its own terrace, fully equipped kitchen, large living space, sauna and fitness facilities.

InterContinental Baku also boasts The Seven Beauties Spa, which takes its name from a Nazami poem, home to an indoor pool, sauna, hammam and fitness centre, and Khamsa Restaurant, offering Mediterranean and Azerbaijani cuisine with local and international wines. A private dining room is available as well.

The hotel is ideally located, adjacent to Sahil metro station and the Seaside Boulevard, connecting the urban districts with the Unesco World Heritage Old City. Baku Airport is just a 25 km journey away.

This is the first of several openings to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the creation of the InterContinental brand. Further debuts are set to take place in Spain, Vietnam, Angola, the UAE, Thailand, Australia and Japan throughout the remainder of 2021.
