Hospitality industry professional attended the recent TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR event in Singapore, where we caught up with him to find out about his biggest career mistakes and what he has learned from them.
has had quite a varied career, being first involvement in the business and financial sector as an investment advisor before moving into the hospitality industry. He studied at both Singapore Management University and Durham University Business School, then went on to work as an investment advisor in John Keells Stockbrokers and as a senior investment advisor in Nation Lanka Equities before he took on a role as the managing director of Hotel Nippon in Sri Lanka. He is currently undertaking an MBA in Singapore Management University.
Biggest career mistake
Vethody says that despite his diverse career experience, perhaps not choosing a career in hospitality at the beginning was his biggest mistake. He regrets not having had the focus on one particular sector of interest, as he thinks this would have helped him to become more experienced more quickly within the hospitality industry. However, he also acknowledges that a more direct focus comes with its own risks, as you have fewer options if you are going down a very prescribed path. He also says that hindsight is a tricky thing, as you can look back on mistakes you made more objectively, but that without those mistakes, you wouldn’t be where you are today. Mistakes are all part of the learning process in a career, and they are an invaluable part of the professional experience.
Lessons learned and career advice
One of the biggest pieces of advice that Vethody wishes to impart onto prospective hospitality professionals is to do their homework. Make sure you know the industry well, have a good sense of how it works and what your competitors are doing. The practical nature of the job is often far removed from the glamour of working in and operating a hotel, so he says that the most important thing is to be sure that you love the job, the hospitality industry and all that comes with it.
