IHG Hotels & Resorts is debuting two brands to Hungarian capital Budapest thanks to a signing with central European property development and investment group, Wing.

The major hotel group believes that the upcoming Hotel Indigo Budapest Andrassy and Holiday Inn Express Vagohid demonstrate investment and growth in the premium and essentials hotel segments.

Prime Indigo

In the city’s sixth district, Hotel Indigo Budapest Andrassy will open in Q2 2028, with 103 guestrooms, a bar and a restaurant. The property will enjoy a prime location on the tree-lined boulevard, Andrassy Avenue, which was recognised as a world heritage site in 2002, close to the new museum quarter in the City Park.

This signing is the latest addition in the rapid growth of the Hotel Indigo brand, which as of Q2 2023 had 145 open hotels and a 128-strong pipeline globally.

Southern Express

The other signing, Holiday Inn Express Vagohid, is set to open in early 2027 in Budapest’s district nine, with 162 guestrooms. Situated in the southern part of the city, the hotel will be amongst businesses, close to the National Theatre, MUPA Budapest theatre and the athletic stadium, which recently hosted the World Athletics Championships.

Holiday Inn Express has more than 3,000 open properties globally, and over 330,000 rooms, spanning in excess of 50 countries.

Owner confidence

Willemijn Geels, VP development, Europe, IHG Hotels & Resorts, commented: “We are thrilled to partner with Wing to bring Hotel Indigo and Holiday Inn Express to the country, through these distinct and exciting properties.

“These signings show the confidence of owners in our brands, and their popularity with guests around the world who will soon be welcomed to this energetic and historic capital city in our hotels, whether that is for business, leisure or events.”

Diversifying developments

Noah Steinberg, the chairman and CEO of Wing, said: “Wing’s hotel portfolio has grown significantly in recent years, and a number of top international hotel brands have chosen our developments. With the signing of Hotel Indigo Budapest Andrassy and Holiday Inn Express Budapest Vagohid, Wing will join an elite club of real estate developers that have completed at least 1,000 hotel rooms.

“Diversifying our hotel developments both in terms of location and brands is an important part of our strategy, so we are delighted to welcome two highly successful brands from the prestigious IHG Hotels & Resorts family to our projects.”

Hungarian footprint

These hotels follow the signing of Kimpton Budapest, with voco Budapest also on the way.

IHG Hotels & Resorts currently has four hotels in Hungary, operating under the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts and Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts brands, with an additional three hotels in the pipeline.
