Hotel giant InterContinental Hotels Group recently announced its plans to begin operating two of its brands in the UK for the first time. We find out more about the arrival of Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants and voco Hotels to the British Isles.
IHG’s UK expansion
IHG has become the UK’s leading luxury hotel operator following the addition of a number of new hotels operated by the group in a recent deal with Covivio, formerly Foncière des Régions. The property agreement will see the rebranding of 12 existing hotels and one new hotel in the pipeline to increase the group’s portfolio by 13 in the UK market. Nine of the open hotels joined the IHG family at the end of the July, while the remaining three hotels to be rebranded will come into the fold in the third quarter of this year. The two brands that will give their names to these new ventures are IHG’s luxury boutique offering Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants and its new upscale brand vovo Hotels.
Kimpton and voco
As one of IHG’s boutique brands, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants currently has 66 hotels located in 35 cities, and the new British and Scottish hotels that are planned as part of this new deal will further expand the brand’s global presence. Kimpton will open in properties across the UK and Scotland, including in desirable destinations such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. London will receive its first Kimpton hotel in Bloomsbury in the literary centre of the capital, located on the famous Russell Square. The building dates from 1898 and currently houses The Principal London. In Manchester, the Kimpton will take on another The Principal property, with the opening date set for coming year. Scotland will also see two The Principal buildings in Edinburgh and Glasgow converted into Kimpton branded properties in 2019. voco will be hitting Wales, with the first UK property to open on Cardiff Bay in The Principal St. David’s Hotel in 2018.
InterContinental Hotels and Resorts and Indigo
Some of IHG’s more established brands will also be hitting UK shores in the near future, with InterContinental Hotels and Resorts taking over The Principal Edinburgh George Street towards the end of 2019. Hotel Indigo’s own personal brand of style and lifestyle will be making its way to Leeds, setting up shop in The Principal Met Leeds Hotel in 2020. Further hotels in around the UK will also be rebranded by IHG in 2018.
