Hospitality giant IHG will grow its presence in Montenegro after signing a deal with real estate development company Celebic Group to open the country’s first InterContinental property.

Scheduled to launch in autumn 2023, InterContinental Resort Amma, Canj – Montenegro will deliver an attractive accommodation option for visitors to the Balkans.

Expansion in the Balkans

Following the signing of a franchise agreement between IHG and Celebic Group, InterContinental Resort Amma, Canj – Montenegro will soon join the former’s sister property, Regent Porto Montenegro, on the Adriatic seafront in the south of the country.

This luxury retreat will provide a new place to stay on the Biserna Obala, also known as Pearl Coast, which makes up part of 1,200 m of unspoilt coastline backed with wooded hills. Owing to its idyllic coastal setting and proximity to Dubrovnik, the tourist town of Canj is among Europe’s fastest growing luxury leisure markets.

“InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is one of the world’s best-known luxury global travel brands, and as we celebrate its 75th anniversary this year, we’re delighted to sign an agreement with Celebic Group to welcome InterContinental Resort Amma, Canj – Montenegro into our growing lifestyle and luxury collection,” said Willemijn Geels, vice president of development in Europe for IHG Hotels & Resorts. “At IHG Hotels & Resorts, we are proud to have a positive, assured brand presence in the Balkan countries and we consider Celebic Group to be the ideal partner as we continue our growth in the region throughout the next few years.

“The opening of InterContinental Resort Amma, Canj – Montenegro, anticipated for autumn 2023, adds further momentum to our recent expansion in the Balkans, which saw Voco Podgorica welcome guests through its doors in 2020, and the signing of Holiday Inn Express Podgorica, which is set to open towards the end of this year, also in partnership with Celebic Group.”

A coastal retreat for business and leisure travellers

The resort will cater for both business and leisure travellers across 198 guestrooms, including 60 suites, along with several villas and a luxury residential development.

Notable amenities here will include a swimming pool with its own bar, and indoor and outdoor wellness facilities comprising a spa with four treatment rooms, three saunas and a fully equipped fitness centre. Guests will be able to drink and dine at the resort’s main restaurant, rooftop bar and intimate club lounge.

These leisure facilities will be joined by a number of meeting rooms, as well as a ballroom, and 260-space underground parking.

Goran Darmanovic, advisor to the president at Celebic Group, said: “We are pleased to expand our longstanding partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts with the signing of InterContinental Resort Amma, Canj – Montenegro. “The hotel will be the first branded property in Canj and presents a strong opportunity to attract visitors to the town, coupled with the introduction of a luxury residential development as part of the project.”
