Hyatt Regency Houston reveals ambitious renovation

A Hyatt Regency hotel in the Lone Star State has unveiled the fruits of a multimillion-dollar renovation project, encompassing both its 955 guest rooms and public spaces.
A significant revamp of Hyatt Regency Houston, one of the Texan city’s largest hotels, has finished – with impressive results.
A new era for Hyatt Regency’s property
The completion of the Houston landmark’s renovation comes under the leadership of the hotel’s new managing director John Schafer. Joining the property from Grand Hyatt New York, he boasts more than 40 years’ experience of working with Hyatt Hotels Corporation.
“As 2020 has come to an end, and with new opportunities in 2021, we are thrilled to usher in a new era for Hyatt Regency Houston as we announce the completion of an extensive renovation project,” said Schafer. “The hotel was thoughtfully redesigned with today’s modern travellers and executives in mind, while incorporating odes to artist influences from throughout the state, and reflecting Houston’s reputation as a world-class destination known for its rich history and modern innovations.
“With the updates now complete, we are excited to reintroduce the hotel as a one-stop destination that blends top-notch hospitality, world-class dining and high-end meeting facilities paired with modern comforts and conveniences for business and leisure travellers alike.”
A property-wide transformation
Hotel guests will first encounter the newly redesigned lobby, featuring a traditional check-in counter and individual stations set against a dramatic 30-storey atrium. Creating intimate areas within this towering space, the design takes inspiration from Marfa, where artists are famous for producing installations from a site’s existing architecture.
The lobby leads onto updated corridors with a refreshed palette of greys, blues and roses, and refreshed rooms where the downtown views are complemented by contemporary decor and colours inspired by the artist Mark Rothko. Guest rooms feature modern amenities such as smart TVs, and bathrooms – some of which come with standalone soaking tubs – exhibit a sleek new aesthetic.
Meanwhile, the LobbiBar now takes up most of the first floor, with distinct seating zones in wood canopied booths and a quartz-topped bar covered by slatted-wood canopy, while signature restaurant Shula’s Steakhouse displays a new contemporary Scandinavian style and three separate dining areas – including a private dining room inspired by a modern French bistro. These venues are joined by Einstein Brother’s Bagels, which also exhibits a fresh look.
In addition, the renovation work extends to the property’s event space, which features new decor, lighting and state-of-the-art technology. Altogether, the hotel houses 71,000 sq ft of event space, including the 16,000 sq ft Imperial Ballroom.
