Hotel Morgan reopens post-renovation in West Virginia

Following a year-long revamp of an existing property – the result of a partnership between Charlestowne Hotels and Thrash Group – Hotel Morgan a Wyndham Hotel in Morgantown is now showcasing its stylish new look to guests.

Hotel Morgan a Wyndham Hotel in Morgantown, West Virginia, the home of West Virginia University (WVU), has completed a major refurbishment project. We find out more about how this historic property has been given a fresh lease of life.

A touch-up for a local icon

Working together with Thrash Group, Charlestowne Hotels has helped reimagine the 95-year-old property in downtown Morgantown. After the reopening, Charlestowne will handle management, inclusive of operations, marketing, talent acquisition and revenue management; this marks the company’s tenth opening in a collegiate market and its eighth adaptive reuse project.

All amenities at the 83-key hotel have been refreshed to make the scheme more attractive to guests and the local community, with a special focus on its event facilities, which include two ballrooms, two boardrooms and a rooftop space.

“Morgantown attracts an intersection of leisure and social segments associated with WVU; two distinct audiences that are expected to come back with renewed strength in the coming year,” said Kyle Hughey, executive vice president and COO at Charlestowne Hotels. “To appeal to both segments, we approached Hotel Morgan with a mix of locally driven F&B, creative and operationally friendly packages for current Mountaineers and alumni, and a renewed focus on meeting and events services.”

Keeping the local touch

To connect with both the local community and out-of-town guests, the Hotel Morgan now offers a new F&B concept centred around shared experiences and local treats. Onsite restaurant Anvil + Ax serves breakfast and specialty coffee in the morning, before switching to a menu of shared plates, local craft beers and modern cocktails later in the day, making it the ideal spot for laidback gatherings in the heart of the city – only a short way from the university campus.

“Charlestowne’s personalised approach to renovation and rebranding is unrivalled,” said Ike Thrash, founder and managing member at Thrash Group. “We sought their expertise to strike a balance between honouring the Hotel Morgan’s heritage and introducing contemporary touchpoints designed with a college-town traveller in mind.

“Hotel Morgan has served as a pillar of the Morgantown community for close to a century, and we’re confident in Charlestowne’s ability to skilfully navigate the property through the shifting landscape of today’s university market space.”
