Canopy by Hilton has made its debut in Philadelphia with the opening of a luxurious new property operated by Davidson Hotels & Resorts.

The latest addition to the City of Brotherly Love’s hospitality scene, Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia | Center City brings luxury accommodation to the East Market neighbourhood. We take a closer look at this newly completed project.

Locally inspired design

BLT Architects worked in collaboration with interior designer AvroKO to pay homage to Center City’s historic roots while creating an authentic modern experience within the heritage-rich Stephen Girard Building. Reflecting this approach, the design now pairs contemporary interpretations of the original Beaux Arts architectural elements with bold energy, colours and patterns that bring the space to life. This distinct design is complemented by an art programme inspired by Philadelphia’s modern street art.

As it takes up what’s said to be the birthplace of the modern US department store, the hotel’s public areas encapsulate the feeling of walking through a shopping outlet; this memorable retail experience has been curated by Kate Egan, the owner of local lifestyle stores Egan Day and Egan Day Rittenhouse.

Canopy’s first-floor restaurant, The Wayward, which is opening its outdoor dining area in a limited capacity at the outset to ensure adherence with physical-distancing recommendations, also takes inspiration from the heritage of its surroundings. Guests can expect American dishes that use French ingredients and techniques, paying tribute to the building’s namesake Stephen Girard, who travelled from France to make his home in Philadelphia.

Additional amenities include 3,600 sq ft of indoor and outdoor meeting space, a 24-hour fitness centre and complimentary Canopy Bikes for exploring the city. Emphasising its commitment to the health and safety of guests, the property is also participating in the Hilton CleanStay Program with next-generation technology creating a minimal-contact stay for guests.

A gateway to the neighbourhood

At the heart of Center City’s East Market neighbourhood, Canopy Philadelphia is within moments of Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market, the Fashion District, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and City Hall. This location places the hotel conveniently between the city’s historic and business districts, providing easy access to countless shopping and dining options.

The neighbourhood itself brings together several locally owned restaurants and bars, a range of stores and, as an extension of the hotel’s patio, East Market’s 10,000 sq ft courtyard, which is used for pop-ups such as art exhibits and yoga classes.

“Canopy Philadelphia is proud to announce we have officially opened our doors in the lively East Market neighbourhood of Center City,” said John Fricke, general manager of Canopy Philadelphia. “While we have been anticipating this opening for quite some time, we feel now is the right time to bring our boutique lifestyle hotel experience to guests looking for a safe and welcoming place to stay in the city of Philadelphia.”

Canopy Philadelphia is owned by National Real Estate Advisors on behalf of a client and partners.
