Hilton Worldwide has moved up its entry into the Ghanaian market with a signing for a site in Accra due to open by the end of this year.

The management agreement with High Street Development Company Limited will deliver newbuild hotel Hilton Accra Cantonments.

Earlier entry

The major hotel group already had three hotels in its Ghanaian pipeline, including Hilton Garden Inn Accra Liberation Road, but the latest deal leapfrogs the trio in terms of completion schedule.

The new property will be located in Cantonments, an upscale suburb which is home to multiple embassies and high commissions in the capital city. The site will also be less than 5km from Kotoka International Airport.

Facilities profile

Hilton Accra Cantonments will feature 145 guestrooms and a range of dining options including an all-day dining restaurant, a lobby lounge and pool bar.  In terms of leisure facilities, the hotel will offer a gym, spa, and outdoor swimming pool.

In addition, it will have more than 900 sq m of event space including a ballroom, seven meeting rooms and an executive boardroom.

African doubling

Carlos Khneisser, vice president, development, Middle East and Africa, Hilton, said: “With the signing of Hilton Accra Cantonments, we are delighted to be growing our pipeline in Ghana and adding momentum to our plans to more than double our portfolio in Africa in the coming years.

“The opening of the hotel later this year will mark our entry into Ghana – one of the world’s largest producers of gold and cocoa, and a burgeoning tourist destination. We look forward to this exciting milestone which will highlight our continued expansion in Africa.”

Attractive option

Dr Charles Mensa, owner, High Street Development Company Limited, added: “We are delighted to partner with Hilton to open this world-class hotel which will soon grace Ghana’s capital city.

“We are confident that once open, the hotel will be an attractive option for travellers to Accra, offering high-quality accommodations and globally renowned service standards.”

Positive pipeline

Hilton currently has 43 hotels in Africa, with another 65 under development.

Notable pipeline projects include The Groove DoubleTree by Hilton Ain El Sokhna in Egypt, bringing 200 keys to the Gulf of Suez in Q2 2024; in eastern Africa the 169-room Hilton Hawassa Resort & Spa will arrive on the shores of Lake Awassa in Ethiopia during Q1 2025; and over in west Africa, Hilton Hotel Praia will deliver 201 keys to Cidade da Praia within the Cape Verde islands in Q2 2026.
