The ex-president and CEO of Scandic and Belmond’s former development director have become partners of hotel owner and operator advisory firm Hotelintel Consulting.

After bringing in the expertise of two high-profile industry figures, Hotelintel Consulting is eyeing fresh opportunities to pursue its growth agenda.

Bolstering its ranks

The Oslo-based firm, which advises owners, investors and operators throughout the life cycle of Scandinavian hotels from site selection to asset management, has announced the appointment of Even Frydenberg and Reinier van der Veeken as partners. The pair will work alongside existing partner Tore Rodahl.

“It is with great pleasure that I welcome our two new partners,” said Rodahl. “They are both extremely skilled industry people with broad international management experience. Hotelintel is now strengthening its focus in Norway with a wider range of advisory services, while at the same time expanding its scope on the Scandinavian market.”

A new role for Frydenberg

Frydenberg was president and CEO of Scandic between 2017 and January 2019, having previously held senior positions at Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts. HotelIntel said that he would initially alternate between the firm’s office in Oslo and the headquarters of hotel services provider Zaplox, where he is CEO, in the Swedish city of Lund.

“Scandinavia has long been a unique market with little (positive) influence from the outside world,” said Frydenberg. “Even before Covid19, there was a lot of interest and pressure on the Scandinavian hotel industry to become more international. This pressure has clearly not diminished now, during and after the pandemic.

“Hotelintel will become a market leader in tailored hospitality consulting services and we can connect our clients directly to key decisionmakers in the global hospitality industry through our international networks.”

Van der Veeken’s strong track record

Van der Veeken has previously worked in development-related roles for Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Hyatt Hotels Corporation. His most recent post was with Belmond, where he served as development director between January 2018 and October 2020.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to work in a part of the world that so far has been most focused on regional brands and development,” explained van der Veeken. “The Scandinavian market now seems to be open to international hotel concepts. Hotelintel will offer in-depth knowledge, experience and a broad overview of all commercial agreements and contract terms for global hotel brands, carefully adapted for the Scandinavian hospitality industry.”
