Meliá Hotels International is continuing to expand globally, albeit with a particular focus on APAC, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.

Our researchers report that Meliá Hotels International has an active development pipeline of 56 properties, encompassing 14,474 new rooms in total. We take a closer look at the key figures behind the Spanish hotel group’s growth plans.

Meliá marches on

For the remainder of 2020, Meliá has another 17 projects with 4,765 rooms due for completion. 17 more will follow next year, bringing an additional 4,038 keys.

Seven hotels will open in 2022, meanwhile, adding 1,515 rooms to the group’s portfolio. For 2023 and beyond, 15 properties with 4,156 rooms are on the books.

Of Meliá’s 56 new hotels, 47 will be in the four-star segment while nine will be in the five-star category.

Regional perspectives

APAC will be Meliá’s strongest growth region in the coming years. Here, the pipeline contains no fewer than 28 projects with 6,632 rooms. By way of comparison, Europe is second with just 12 new hotels and 3,422 keys mooted.

Africa will get six new hotels, while the Middle East and North America will each get four new properties, and Latin America will receive two more.

Turning our attention back to APAC, the group’s growth will be heavily concentrated in Vietnam and Malaysia, where eight and five hotels will open respectively.

With five projects soon to be completed, however, Cape Verde will welcome the highest number of openings in Africa – spanning a hugely impressive 1,749 rooms.

Meliá’s fastest-growing hotel brands

Signature brand Meliá Hotels & Resorts takes a clear lead when it comes to the group’s fastest-growing flags, with 33 new hotels and 9,351 rooms on their way. Innside by Meliá comes in a distant second place with just 12 new properties and 2,385 additional keys.

Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts claims third place with five projects and 1,277 rooms in their pipeline. And ME by Meliá, Sol Hotels & Resorts and Paradisus Resorts will grow by three, two and one properties respectively.

New Meliá hotels you need to know about

The company’s largest ongoing project, according to our database, is the refurbishment and expansion of the 987-room Meliá Sunny Beach on Bulgaria’s east coast. When completed, the complex will offer accommodation spread out over three buildings, one of which will be a newbuild. Guests will be able to avail themselves of a variety of F&B outlets, pools and other entertainment options.

In beautiful Boa Vista, Cape Verde, meanwhile, Meliá White Sands Hotel & Spa will open by late 2020 and offer guests 835 stunning rooms and suites right on the coast. The hotel complex will be split into family and adult-only sections, with family-friendly facilities including two children’s pools, a baby pool, an adventure playground and a kids club. There will also be a wet bar and poolside restaurant serving up first-class refreshments throughout the day. In addition, the main hotel building will offer an exceptional choice of fine-dining restaurants and themed bars.

Over on the western coast of Albania, Meliá San Pietro Resort Durres will open its doors by late 2020. This 350-key property will feature a variety of rooms, suites and private residences, along with several pools, a casino and the largest spa and wellness area in the region. Moreover, there will be multiple restaurants and bars offering guests a variety of culinary delights.

Last but not least, in Q2 2021, Meliá Adhiwangsa Surabaya will welcome visitors as part of a major leisure development that includes a shopping mall and a golf course. The hotel will offer 300 rooms, a swimming pool, a spa, a kid’s club, two restaurants and extensive meeting and events facilities.
