One of the world’s leading hotel groups, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is looking at a bright future.

With a pipeline of 392 hotels set to bring 90,498 new rooms, IHG is going strong. We find out more about where the group is growing most quickly and some of the most noteworthy projects.

IHG’s key growth regions

Without a doubt, Asia is IHG’s fastest-growing market. 199 projects are in the pipeline here and will add 46,300 new rooms to the market.

North America follows in a distant second place with 74 planned openings and 10,620 new rooms. Europe takes third place with 64 launches and 12,715 rooms. This shows that projects in Europe are larger on average than in North America.

42 hotels are slated to open in the Middle East and will bring 18,543 rooms, making this the region home to IHG’s largest new hotels in terms of rooms.

South America and Africa will receive 8 and 5 hotels respectively.

Key countries and cities in IHG’s growth strategy

With Asia being the fastest-growing region, it’s no surprise that China is IHG’s fastest-growing national market. Here 104 hotels will open soon and bring 24,214 rooms. It also feels almost obvious that 4 of IHG’s top 5 cities are in China. They are Chengdu (6), Zhengzhou (5), Hangzhou (4) and Shenzhen (4). However, the city with the most openings in Dubai with 12 launches.

The United States comes in second with 64 launches with 9,436 rooms. Australia and India follow with 19 openings each. The United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and Germany get 16, 15, 14 and 13 new properties respectively. Vietnam completes the top ten with a pipeline of 9 hotels.

Strong growth projections

For 2020 IHG is planning 28 hotel openings, making next year a rather quiet one. However, 2021 already has 87 launches on the books and 2022 will see 60 openings. 22 projects are already signed off for 2023.

For 2024 and beyond the company has another 195 hotels in the pipeline.

IHG’s most noteworthy projects

IHG’s largest new hotel is the voco Makkah in Saudi Arabia which will open in early 2020. The 4,200-room hotel will be in a prime location only a few minutes from the Masjid Al Haram. This property will be within the greater Maad Hospitality Towers. This mixed-used development includes restaurants, lounge areas, event halls and separate male and female prayer halls.

Another striking property is the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum Hotel. Designed by architect Simpson Haugh, it will replace the existing hotel with a smaller one and add 340 serviced apartments. The scheme, which will rise to 29 storeys, will provide 62 affordable social rented homes.

By late 2022, the InterContinental Berlin will have gone through a full refurb and welcome guests with the most modern amenities and luxuries. The renovation will take place in several phases to ensure guests will be able to enjoy a continued high level of hospitality and uninterrupted guest services.

By late 2020, the striking InterContinental Mina Al Arab Resort will launch in Ras Al Khaimah. It will be on the Mina Al Arab Island development, RAK Properties’ newest development in the emirate designed to build tourism and offer elegant residential and commercial properties.
