Glasgow gains second Courtyard hotel

by | 11 Dec 2021 | Projects

Operated by Hotel Co 51, Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow SEC has opened its doors, offering guests a convenient accommodation option next to a major entertainment arena.

This welcome arrival represents Marriott International’s latest foray into the Scottish market.

Glasgow’s prominent new hotel

The new Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow SEC, the result of a partnership between hotel group Marriott International and operator Hotel Co 51, is ideally located near the River Clyde and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), home of the Ovo Hydro. Its 216 keys include 16 family and 44 superior rooms, some boasting sweeping views across to Finnieston.

An 80-cover restaurant, Hopscotch, further enhances the offering, enabling customers to sample Scottish favourites prepared with local ingredients. Moreover, mixologist Frazer Graham’s bar menu features a range of seasonal cocktails and unexpected treats, ideal for those attending a concert at the Ovo Hydro seeking somewhere new for pre- and post-show drinks.

General manager Ross Saunders, a native Glaswegian who has moved across from Moxy Glasgow Merchant City to open Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow SEC, said: “It’s just over 36 years ago to the day that the first Courtyard Marriott opened for business travellers. I’m proud to be launching this stunning new hotel at the SEC but also within striking distance of the thriving bars and restaurants in Finnieston.”

A sustainable scheme perfect for Cop26 delegates

Interestingly, the hotel’s adopted a number of sustainability measures to reduce its carbon footprint. Energy-efficient construction techniques were employed during the building process, and a no-plastic policy is being followed in the bar, which only uses glass or 100% compostable paper cups.

Given the hotel’s convenient location within walking distance of the SEC, business from event attendees is practically guaranteed. Proof of this came in the form of the recent Cop26 climate change conference, which drew delegates from over 200 countries and coincided with the property’s opening.

Donovan Sumner, regional director of operations UK for Hotel Co 51, said: “This is our 14th hotel opening in the UK and first Courtyard Marriott. We’re excited to be working with the team at the SEC as events and conferences get back on track. Thanks to the location of the hotel, we were full for the climate change summit and will continue to build on that as one of the key hotels in the city for travellers and delegates attending events in the area.”
