French hotel group Accor plants 100,000 trees in the UK [Construction Report]
Accor is aiming to champion reforestation around the world.
As part of their effort to promote sustainable practices and protect the environment, Accor recently announced excellent results in their British tree-planting programme.
Accor is showering the UK with trees as part of their Planet 21 sustainable development campaign.
Plant for the Planet, as this particular initiative is called, has planted around 100,000 trees in 64 places around the UK.
We find out more.
Accor continues global tree planting initiative
French hotel giant Accor has reached an important milestone in its British tree planting programme, passing the 100,000 mark.
These trees have been planted in 64 locations covering an impressive 141 hectares with 107 different tree species. Accor’s tree planting target coincides with the Committee on Climate Change’s demand for 30,000 hectares of forest to be planted across the UK every year.
Pip Borrill, head of partnerships at the Woodland Trust, said, “We need new woodland like never before. Government has recently committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The expansion of the UK’s tree canopy cover from 13% to 17% is an essential part of the solution, including the recommendation to increase on-farm tree planting, but for the country to reach that target we need to see a three-fold increase in current woodland creation levels.”
Plant for the Planet
Accor’s Plant for the Planet scheme is part of their bigger Planet 21 programme for sustainable development.
So far, the group has planted an incredible seven million trees across the world, in over 375 locations in 29 countries totalling an area of 2,500 football pitches.
Thomas Dubaere, COO of Accor Northern Europe, says, “Planting more trees is not just an environmental challenge for the UK, it is a worldwide one. It is vital, therefore, that organisations with a global influence play a significant role in tackling this issue by investing their resources and raising awareness of the problem.”
“Our Plant for the Planet programme is a global one, not country-specific, as we understand our role as a global business in improving the environment we live in. We are incredibly proud of the success the programme has had to date and we will continue to plant trees around the world,” Mr Dubaere explained.
